Summary
There’s nothing funnier in anime thanan unintentionally hilarious moment. Sometimes a story will try to create a serious moment only for it to look hilarious. None of these moments were ever intended to be funny, which makes them even funnier. Having an unintentionally hilarious moment is probably pretty bad for a show’s overall message, but it can bea fun moment of reprieve in an otherwise serious setting. Plus,it’s fun to go back and watch the unintentionally hilarious moments out of contextwhere they’re even funnier.
Unintentionally hilarious moments can happen in any genre of anime at any moment. They can be as simple as the moment Rock Lee takes off his leg braces or as long-lasting as Shintaro Midorima’s insane shooting skills. No matter where they pop up,unintentionally hilarious moments in anime are some of the funniest overall, creating a surprising and genuine laugh out of nowhere every time.

10Shintaro Midorima’s Shooting Skills
Even the Best NBA Players of All Time Would Be Jealous
Kuroko’s Basketballis thebest basketball anime sincethe legendary Slam Dunk. It’s centered around Kuroko and Taiga as they seek to win their basketball league and become the best players they can. Most of the show is realistic, showcasing high-school-aged kids playing basketball fairly well. The show gets pretty outrageous when it introduces the players from the Generation of Miracles, a group of five players who played together in middle school. They each have an individual skill that makes them dominate, butthere’s no skill as hilariously broken as Shintaro Midorima’s.
Midorima’s skill is thathe can hit a shot from anywhere. He can even imitate a shooting motion without the ball in his hand, receive the ball mid-shot, and make that as well. This16-year-old from Japan is better than every NBA playerwho has ever lived, which is a hilarious realization. The show was played fairly straight up until this point as well, making Midorima’s insane skills an absolute highlight.

9Sasuke Wants To Be Hokage
He Must’ve Forgotten About All The Terrorism He Committed
Sasuke is one of the best characters in anime. He’s powerful, caring, but has a tragic backstory that’s riddled him with trauma. Overall, he’s never been a funny character, but nothing in Naruto is quite as funny as when Sasuke tells his former comrades thathe wants to be the Hokage. Up until this point in the story,Sasuke has been aliteral terrorist, joining the Akatsuki, a terrorist organization, and doing nothing good for anyone but himself.
He’s been selfish, irresponsible, and hellbent on a path of destruction. After realizing his brother Itachi slayed their clan for the good of Konoha, however, he quickly changes his tune

He’s been selfish, irresponsible, and hellbent on a path of destruction. After realizing his brother Itachi slayed their clan for the good of Konoha, however, he quickly changes his tune. Sasuke’s former friends are right to beseriously confused by this statement. Sasuke has chosen to be their enemy time and time again and now thinks they’d allow him to be their leader. It’s one of the funniest moments in the series because of thesheer absurdity of it all.
8Light Can’t Develop Feelings
Light Might Be an Edgelord
Light Yagami is pretty busy inDeath Note. He’s just found a book that allows him to kill whoever he wants just by writing their name. Since finding the book, Light occupies his time with writing in it, evading the police, and satiating his own ego. While it makes sense that Light doesn’t want to have a girlfriend who might take his time away from his goal, the way he says it is unintentionally hilarious.
In episode 14 of the anime, Light says,“I can’t develop feelings. That’s how idiots mess up”.Light might be a mastermind genius, but he’s also an edgelord. This quote is hilarious because the show has already been fairly dark up until this point, so Light stomping his foot angrily at the idea of having a girlfriend is pretty funny.

6Retsu Follows a Guard
Baki Is Ridiculous From Top to Bottom
Bakihas never been accused of taking itself too seriously. It’s one of themost ridiculous series all-around, from its hilarious fight scenes to its insane concepts. One of the funniest moments in all of anime happens when Retsu Kaioh decides to go and find the caveman Pickle for himself. He sneaks onto a military base only to find out it’s heavily fortified. For most people, this would be a problem, but not for Retsu. He sneaksright behinda guard, standing literally millimeters from him as he follows him.
He follows the guard so closely that Retsu has to copy the guard’s breathing. The guard then sees another guardwho doesn’t see Retsu at all. Retsu then switches to the other guardwhile neither of them notice, even though they both have flashlights and Retsu is a fully grown adult male.

5Kids Sing Death Song For Fun?
When Someone Has PTSD, Don’t Make It Worse
Plutois an anime adaptation of the mangabased on the famousAstro Boyseries.Plutoitself is a series that missed the mark several times, creating plot holes that didn’t make sense and problems that never should’ve existed. One of the strangest and most unintentionally hilarious moments in the show comes when Wassily, a child with severe PTSD, finally speaks his first sentences after a long time of only saying one word. He sings an incredibly dark song about Bora coming to his home and destroying everything he knows.
Later in the series, the other kids in his orphanage are seensinging the song together. Keep in mind that there is no way they don’t know how brutal this song is, as they’re also all from the same war-torn country as Wassily. The whole time they’re singing happily, he’s rightfully in the corner petrified, creating a scene so convoluted it’s hilarious.
4Baki Fights Fake Opponents
Imaginary Opponents Get You This Hurt??
Bakiis the least real fighting-based anime there is. People hit each other with explosives in the face and live, move faster than speeding bullets, andcan even fight imaginary animals. Watching Baki get smacked against a wall by his own imagination is one of the most hilarious moments in the series. There’s a local boy in the training room watching Baki and providing commentary too, making it even funnier thatBaki is letting some random kid watch him get bullied by the air.
3Rock-Lee Dropping His Weights To Fight Gaara
Wait, How Much Was That?!?
Rock Lee is a fairly funny character inNaruto. He’s a straight man in that most jokes go over his head due to his absolute sincerity. Because of his sincerity,he’s able to look past what are absolutely ridiculous feats. During his fight with Gaara, Guy gives Lee permission to take off his heavy ankle weights, much to Rock Lee’s surprise. Everyone in the test area laughs at the two for having such an old-school training method untilRock Lee drops the weights in a massive explosion.
Seeing everyone’s faces as they realize Rock Lee casually walks around with hundreds, or even thousands of pounds on his legs every day is hilarious. Even the idea that Rock Lee doesn’t seehow insane it is to walk around with dump trucks tied to your feetall the time is another unintentionally hilarious moment.

1Light Eating a Chip
“And I’ll Take This Chip, and Eat Another One!”
For a very serious series,Death Notehas some of the most unintentionally funny momentsin anime. The peak of the unintentional humor comes during episode eight when Light is in the thick of his egotistic madness. He knows he’s being surveilled by the police but still wants to do his “duty” and kill bad guys using the Death Note. What does he do?Why, he eats chips, of course. During an intense inner monologue,Light resolves his own problems by eating chips fiercely.
It’s a very famous moment even for people who’ve never seen anime. It’s ridiculously funny becauseLight’s intensity makes no sense at all.Around his friends and family, he’s a normal guy who acts calm and composed. There’s no reason to be shouting in your own head about eating chips, but Light’s pretty crazy anyway.
