One ofX-Men’s most powerful psychics of all time just lost their powers, beginning a radical change to their mutant abilities and identity. The change comes as several of X-Men’s younger mutants form a new group, fighting for mutant supremacy. In response, a ragtag crew including Ms. Marvel, Laura Kinney’s Wolverine, Prodigy and Sophie Cuckoo are fighting back.
InNYX, themind-controlling mutant Empath has been recruitingmutants for his plan to found a new mutant nation of Krakoa. The Stepford Cuckoos are part of the group, selecting Sophie to work alongside Ms. Marvel and earn her trust before turning traitor. The plan succeeded, but Sophie has bonded with Ms. Marvel and begins to doubt that her loyalty to Empath was earned. When her sisters force the issue,Sophie cuts herself off from their shared psychic hivemind, while also undoing Empath’s control of the other pawns in his plan.

Sadly, as a result of breaking free, Sophie seems to have lost her telepathic abilities.NYX #5comes from the creative team of Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, Raúl Angulo, Francesco Mortarino, Elisabetta D’Amico, and Joe Sabino.
Wolverine Names X-Men’s Best Hero, and It’s Not Cyclops: “The Best Of Us”
Wolverine names the best of X-Men’s heroes, naming the character he sees as the team’s true moral heart - and it’s not his best friend Nightcrawler!
One of the X-Men’s Most Powerful Psychics Enters a New Age
Sophie Cuckoo Has Lost Her Powers
Sophie Cuckoo and the rest of the Stepford Cuckoos are identical mutant clones grown from the eggs of Emma Frost. Emma Frost is one of the most powerful telepaths in the X-Men, behind only Charles Xavier and Jean Grey. The Stepford Cuckoos inherited all their genetic mother’s powers including her telepathy, mind control, illusions, telekinesis, and organic diamond form. The difference between Frost and the ‘Five-In-One’ is the sisters' telepathic hive mind, which allows them to share their thoughts and enhance their shared telepathic power.
Whenever the Five-In-One used their psychic link to merge their individual telepathic powers together, Sophie would always be the dominant personality and commanded her other sisters. The Stepford Cuckoos have remained connected through tragedy and death, with the team losing both Sophie and Esme at different times, only to regain them thanks to Krakoan resurrection. However, now that connection is broken, and it remains to be seen what powers Sophie has by herself, or how they’ll manifest without her connection to her sisters.

NYX #5emphasizes the seismic shift in Sophie Cuckoo, as her telepathy has always been a form of sixth sense. Battered and exhausted, she exclaims,“I can’t hear anyone,“showing how much she’ll have to adjust to a world without her powerful sisters always in her head.
It’s Been a While, but X-Men Is Ready to Return to the Theme That First Defined the Franchise
Chris Claremont should be proud that the X-Men have returned to his vision for the beloved franchise; it has always been about social justice.
Sophie Cuckoo Was Always Meant to be a Hero
It’s a Good Thing That the Five-In-One Stepford Cuckoos Have Been Split Up
Sophie has long acted as the leader of the Cuckoos, and her stewardship has guided the group to act as a force of good. Sophie has been instrumental in combating the more villainous inclinations of her sister Esme, who was a supporter of far more radical mutant supremacy. Sadly, Sophie found herself outvoted when it came to working with Empath, and she tried to go along with her sisters until her conscience couldn’t take it anymore. Now, the other Cuckoos have sided with Esme and Empath, creating a major philosophical break in the family.
Thankfully, before losing her powers Sophie strikes a major blow against Empath’s plans, but she now finds herself powerless, without her family, and surrounded by friends who know she had planned to betray them. TheX-Menjust lost one ofthe world’s most potent psychic forcesto Empath’s coalition of villainous mutants, while Sophie Cuckoo is left to find a new identity and purpose.
