Netflix’sAmerican Primevalhas quickly become one of the streaming service’s most popular shows, but a sequel might not be a great idea. The show centers on the Utah territory during the time ofthe Utah Warand follows conflicts that occurred between the US military, Mormon militia, Native American groups, and independent travelers. WhileAmerican Primevalis based on some true events, the series also makes use of fictional characters. Given its gripping subject matter and historical backing, it is unsurprising thatAmerican Primevalhas risen to the top of Netflix’s charts.

Though Netflix has released other Western shows before,American Primevalhas become a success with audiences in a way that no other has before, prompting fans to question whether the show will receive a second season. SinceAmerican Primeval’s finale saw many of its main characters get killed, a second season seems difficult to imagine. However, given the show’s success, it would make sense for Netflix to want to release a follow-up, butanAmerican Primevalspinoff would undoubtedly make more sense than a second season.

American Primeval Season 2 Would Be A Mistake

It Would Be Very Difficult To Continue The Story In A Satisfying Way

American Primeval’s endingfeels very self-contained and wraps up most storylines. In the final episode of the series, many of the main characters are killed and the remaining characters, Sara, Devin, and Two Moons, decide to continue their journey to California after the death of Isaac Reed. While there were several main characters,Sara and Reed were the emotional core of the series and the primary narrative drive. Audiences got to see them slowly become a team and eventually fall in love with each other, so it would be hard to see her story continue without him.

Every American Primeval Episode, Ranked Worst To Best

While each of the episodes of Netflix’s Western thriller are crucial to the plot, some of them stand out more for their exciting and shocking moments.

Especially since Sara made the decision not to stop at Crooks Springs and instead to go to California,American Primevalseason 2 would have to use an entirely new setting and largely new characters if it were to continue her story. Likewise, though Jim Bridger and some of the Mormons were also left alive, their stories are not as interesting as Sara’s. If a potential season 2 chose to go down that route, the series would need a new emotional lead, since Bridger was quite ambivalent and the Mormons were framed as villains from the outset.

An American Primeval Prequel Could Be Great

A Prequel Could Bring Back One Of The Best Characters

IfAmerican Primeval’s story continued, it would actually be a lot better for the show to go on as a prequel rather than a true season 2. A prequel would allow Taylor Kitsch to come back as Isaac Reed. Reed was by far one of the most interesting characters in the series, andbased on the brief flashback sequences that are seen in his past, there is certainly more to his story that could be explored. The show’s director, Peter Berg, already stated in an interview withThe Hollywood Reporterthat if the show were to go on, a Reed prequel would be a good choice.

American Primevalcould continue in a lot of different ways other than a direct sequel to the first season.

Though a prequel or sequel season has yet to be confirmed,American Primevalcould easily bring back some of the best elements of the series through an Isaac Reed prequel. By the time Sara meets Isaac, it is clear that he already has a lot of stories to tell, soAmerican Primevalcould hone in on some of those stories and do even more with Kitsch’s character. While Reed and Sara would not be able to reunite,American Primevalcould continue in a lot of different ways other than a direct sequel to the first season.
