Some food-themedAnimal Crossing: New Horizonscharacters have players scratching their heads, wondering whether they’re animals or something else entirely. The franchise has over 400 types of villager designs, all based around animals like cats, dogs, deer, various birds, alligators, and several other types of animals. However, a few villagers in theAnimal Crossingfranchise are unique for being themed around food.

The food-esque design choice has brought up an important question forAnimal Crossingfan and Reddit userLavishnessFit6692: “Are they food!?” The Redditor posed this question to other players, calling out several villagers who look more like plants, desserts, and other food items than animals. They ask other fans if they “think villagers like Tangy and Ketchup are really a cat and a duck respectively, or are they plant-like creatures taking [the] form of animals.” The question has sparked a discussion among players about the nature of these unique villagers.

Animal Crossing Fans Debate The True Nature Of Food Villagers

Are Tangy, Merengue, Ketchup, And The Rest More Food Than Animal?

The consensus in the comments of the Reddit post seems to be thatthese are villagers named after the food and drink they resemble. Redditorvoncatensprochpoints out that there are other animals named after foods inAnimal Crossingthat “don’t necessarily resemble the food,” like Anchovy and Cherry. Yet other villagers aren’t named for the food they do look like, such as Zucker, who looks like a ball of takoyaki. Tangy’s official quote doesn’t shed any light on the matter, as she’s quoted as saying, “They say cats hate citrus. THAT REALLY HURTS MY FEELINGS!”

How To Pick The Best Island Layout In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

There are at least 95 different island layouts for New Horizons players to choose from – but which one is actually the best?

The discussion takes a much darker turn when some fans point out that as long as someone is not a vegetarian or vegan, thenanyAnimal Crossingvillager is technically food. On a sillier note, the Redditor lists Tia among the “food-themed” villagers in the original post, asking whether the elephant villager is actually made of porcelain or if she just happens to look like a teapot. “Don’t eat Tia,” exclaims RedditorMei-Lin11, “She’s a teapot, that’s not food.”

Our Take: Several Animal Crossing Characters Have Confusing Designs

What We Really Want To Know Is What’s Up With Penelope

Animal Crossingis full of its fair share of oddities, from robot octopi to bandage-wrapped dogs. Some villagers are so closely associated with their design accessories, like Puck’s helmet, that it’snearly impossible to recognize themwithout their iconic items. Others, like Coco, are just plain confusing. What is Coco, anyway? Part gyroid, part coconut, perhaps?

But what I really want to know iswhat the deal is with Penelope.I first encountered Penelope when Idove headfirst intoAnimal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete, and nothing seemed amiss at first glance. But then I looked closer and realized that she has a big pink bow instead of ears, and her official description reads, “We want to believe that Penelope simply has unusually bow-shaped ears. The alternative is just too disturbing to contemplate.” Now all I can do is imagine Penelope’s ears popping right off. And, thanks to the original creator of the Reddit post, I now want to take a small nibble out of Tangy inAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, just to see if she tastes like the citrus fruit she resembles.
