Summary

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Sinester Sons #6!As someone who’s been readingGreen LanternandSupermancomics for the better part of his life, I implore DC to not get rid of the newest additions to their mythos. The miniseriesSinister Sonshas concluded and the fate of its central characters hangs in the balance.

For the past few months, I’ve been keeping up with Lor-Zod and the newbie Sinson’s adventures. Two kids grappling with the legacies of their villainous fathers. It was a solid premise for a series. But nowSinister Sonshas come to an end and I fear we’re not going to be seeing much from these two anymore, which would be a huge mistake.

Sinson unleashes a barrage of shots to steal some of Sinestro’s blood and prove their familial connection. But the new Red Lantern simply isn’t impressed. After a talk between the potential father and son goes south, Sinestro throttles the boy and tells him that even if they’re family, Sinson doesn’t matter to him. Thankfully, Lor-Zod comes to his frenemy’s aid and lasers Sinestro with heat vision. Sinson, however, isn’t grateful, and seeing Lor-Zod attack Sinestro enrages Sinson so badly,he manages to tap into the Red Lantern energy.

Sinestro watches Lor-Zod and Sinson fight, smirking at the young Korugarian’s fighting prowess and noting that his experiment has succeeded. Sinestro interrupts the fight and informs the boys that he wanted to see if Sinson could access the Emotional Spectrum and control it. Satisfied that Sinson did, Sinestro leaves the planet to pursue the person who destroyed the Central Power Battery, leaving Lor-Zod and Sinson in charge of defending New Korugar. Lor-Zod and Sinson Have Been Through So Much…That Can’t Be It!

The seeds for Sinister Sons were planted late last year and began with a four-part story in the backups ofGreen Lantern. “Wayward Son” introduced Korg as an orphan who had nothing to his name other than some gear and the unwavering belief that Sinestro was his father. But after years of stealing credits for his horrific caretaker Nagaf, Korg rebels and becomes determined to find Sinestro. Elsewhere in the DC Universe, Lor-Zod was on New Kandor until the first issue ofKneel Before ZodsawGeneral Zod banish his son to the stars for questioning him.

“Wayward Son” can be read inGreen Lantern #4-7 (2024)!

After a couple of months of teasing, Lor-Zod and Korg finally crossed paths in their very own story,Sinister Sons. I’ll admit, even I was skeptical that a book starring General Zod’s son and brand new character like Korg would be entertaining. But as a fan of Tomasi’s work onSuper Sons, I had to give this one a fair shot. I’m glad I did because once these two collided,it strongly reminded me of the rough friendship Robin and Superboy used to share.

The two first meet each other when Korg attempts to steal Lor-Zod’s ship, only to be caught in the act by the young Kryptonian. But before they can settle their differences, the ship is consumed by a space whale. Inside this creature, they meet a space traveler named Major Tom and are attacked by a band of space pirates out to kill the whale. But after several issues, aid finally comes for the boys in the form ofthe person Korg has been searching for his whole life: Sinestro.

There’s a Lot That Can Still Be Done withSinister Sons

One of the best things about the DC Universe is its legacy characters. We see them with heroes all the time and have watched families develop and grow over the past few decades. But what set Sinister Sons apart was the focus on being a villainous legacy and how it impacts these legacies differently. Lor-Zod wanted to step out of his father’s shadow and become his own manwhile Sinson clung to Sinestro’s image, shaping his entire world around who Sinson believed him to be.

…these characters expand two iconic villains from Green Lantern and Superman’s world.

It was a great comic, but unfortunately,Sinister Sons #6is the last issue and with Peter J. Tomasi’s exclusive deal at Ghost Machine, I’m not sure if he’ll ever do more. Granted, the final issue does promise that the two will show up inGreen Lantern, which is better than nothing because there are a lot of questions that still haven’t been answered. What’s going to become of the kids running New Korugar’s defenses? Is Lor-Zod ever going to reconnect with General Zod? And most importantly, is Sinestro Sinson’s father?

While I’m miffed about the book’s cancelation, I get it. Not every comic is going to pull enough sales to justify ongoing status. But I do think there’s something special here withSinister Sons. Not because watching Sinson and Lor-Zod banter is entertaining (which it is), but because these characters expand two iconic villains from Green Lantern and Superman’s world. Granted Lor-Zod isn’t exactly new, butpairing him up with Sinestro’s probable son and giving them an epic adventure through space has been a delight to read.

Keep Sinestro and Zod’s Legacies Alive, DC

There are thousands of characters in the DC Universe and I know not everyone can get the spotlight. Six issues are more than some older characters have had in years. But still, it’d be a shame to ditch these two completely. Maybe it wasn’t the right time and place for a book like Sinister Sons, but the characters make a pretty good team. Hopefully, the next time they show up, DC will have found a place to permanently hold the offspring ofSupermanandGreen Lantern’snemeses.

Green Lantern

Green Lantern is the name given to multiple enforcers of intergalactic justice in the DC Universe. Green Lanterns can harness the cosmic energy of willpower, and create unique spectral objects to face off against their enemies. Though some Green Lanterns have assisted with the Justice League, they primarily belong to the Green Lantern Corps.
