In an interview withScreen Rant’s Grant Hermanns, showrunner Annie Weisman addresses the chances ofBased on a True Storyseason 3. The showrunner and executive producer is candid about the fact thatthere are hopes for the comedy to be renewed. Still, in the quote below, Weisman underlines the fact that season 2 tells a close-ended mystery:

We certainly hope so. We definitely left the door open, but I will also say that I am proud of the fact that, in our eight episodes, we pack a lot in. There’s a lot of comedy, there’s some good romantic comedy storytelling, but we really do tell a close-ended mystery. There’s a lot of twists and turns, but there’s a really good payoff, so I think fans will feel satisfied by the end, but then we also couldn’t resist maybe opening the door to you know some more.

What Weisman’s Comments Mean For Based On A True Story

The Premise Lends Itself To A Continuation

Based on a True Storyseason 2consists of eight episodes, which drop on November 21. The new season catches up with Ava and Nathan as they try to move on from their dangerous brush with true crime and raise their daughter. But danger eventually finds the couple.

The cast ofBased on a True Storyseason 2 features several new additions. Along with the returning Tom Bateman and Liana Liberato, the new episodes welcomeBrooklyn Nine-Ninealum Melissa Fumero as Ava’s new friend Drew. Weisman’s comments promise that season 2 will stand on its own, but the premise ofthe dark comedy lends itself to a continuation. There’s no reason, in other words, that Ava and Nathan couldn’t find another body.

Cuoco, who also executive produces the series with Messina, may have a busy slate ahead. She’s set to lead an HBO comedy from the creators ofHacks.
