Summary

Batmantrades his Batmobile for a V8 Interceptor in a recent piece of fan art, as the Dark Knight travels to the post-apocalyptic wasteland ofMad Max. While the two characters are from totally different universes, the mashup makes sense when considering thesimilarities between Bruce Wayne and Max Rockatansky, which could result in an epic team-up.

Reddit user and artistmattmirthshared the crossover fan art: a beautiful piece of artwork thatblends the worlds of Batman and Mad Max. The artist treats the piece as if it were a long-lost relic of the past, resulting in some beautifully retro-styled artwork.

Michael Keaton as Batman in Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992)

Batman takes the Grant Morrison descriptionof him as a “hairy-chested love-god” to heart in the piece, adapting to the scorching desert by losing both his shirt and long-tights. Mattmirth is also clever in incorporating Emil Minty’s Feral Kid as a stand-in for Robin, complete with his own enlarged batarang.

Michael Keaton’s Batman Gets Way Darker, Admitting He’s Literally Addicted to the Batsuit

Batman ‘89: Echoes #3 made a direct allusion to Bruce Wayne’s “addiction” to being Batman, making his relentless crusader against crime much darker.

In More Ways Than One

There are some notable similarities between Max Rockatansky and Bruce Wayne. Both lost loved ones in desperate acts of violence, and both ride around in tricked-out supercars that are usually the fastest thing on four wheels. Mattmirth highlights this last character “trait” by turning Max’s V8 Interceptorinto the new Batmobile, adding some bat-like tail fins to complete the look. The fan art’s retro approach also recreates the old Batman logo into an all-new crossover, officially christening his fan-made character as “Bat-Max.”

Much like Batman himself, Max Rockatansky finds himself acting as a mentor to the younger generations.

Comic book art: Batman hunches over, preparing to throw a punch.

The inclusion of the Feral Kid as Robin is a nice touch, and this new character is just begging for their own story. Mad Max wasn’t exactly known for taking on sidekicks, but he did act as a mentor to the Feral Kid inThe Road Warriorand to the group of kids inMad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Much like Batman himself, Max Rockatansky finds himself acting as a mentor to the younger generations in spite of his aloof and cold nature. There is something of a wounded child in both characters, who are both haunted by trauma and trying to shut themselves off from the world while still being drawn back to it through young people.

What Could DC Do With This Idea?

While mattmirth’s piece is a loving tribute to both characters, an official Batman and Mad Max crossover isn’t as impossible as it might seem. Both characters are owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, and DC even published the officialcomic book tie-ins to 2015’sMad Max: Fury Road. Perhaps aBatmanandMad Maxcrossover will come to pass someday, but for now, fans can enjoy fan art pieces like mattmirth’s in the meantime.
