This article was originally written Saturday AM and has been updated Sunday AM with up-to-date box office projections (in bold), a full chart, and further analysis.

Captain America: Brave New Worldtopped the domestic chart during its third weekend at the box office, in spite of a major slowdown. The first Marvel Cinematic Universe outing of 2025 is a follow-up to the Disney+ limited seriesThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier, seeing Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) taking up the mantle of the titular hero and more or less immediately being pulled into a conflict with newly elected President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford). TheCaptain America: Brave New Worldreleasekicked off over Presidents' Day weekend, debuting at No. 1 and holding that position the following weekend.
PerVariety, as of Sunday morning,Captain America: Brave New Worldis projected to end the weekend with a 3-day total of$15 millionat the domestic box office. This ismore than enough to earn it the No. 1 spot on the chart for the third weekend in a row, considering the fact that its only new release competition is the Woody Harrelson survival thrillerLast Breath, which is projected to debut with just$7.8 million.
All in all, the entire weekend at the domestic box office is only projected to gross$56.3 millionaltogether. This is set to bethe second-lowest weekend of 2025 so far, behind Super Bowl weekend’s haul of $54.2 million, which included the grosses of titles such as the then-new releasesHeart EyesandLove Hurtsand the holdover titlesDog Man,Companion,Mufasa: The Lion King, and more. Below, see the full Top 5 chart for the domestic box office this weekend:

$84.1 million (weekend 5)
Last Breatharriving on the chart at No. 2 has resulted inthe previous weekend’s No. 2 through No. 5 each moving down the chart one spot apiece. This includes theOsgood Perkins movieThe Monkey, which is doing better than its original $5 million week 2 estimates with a drop of 55%, the family franchise threequelPaddington in Peru, which has dropped 31% in its third weekend, and DreamWorks' Dav Pilkey adaptationDog Man, which fell 28% in its fifth.
With just one new movie charting, the only title to vacate the Top 5 is the Chinese animated importNe Zha 2, which held the No. 5 spot for two consecutive weekends after debuting in domestic theaters. It has now dropped to No. 7 with $1.6 million, representing a 50% drop. While the movie recently surpassedInside Out 2as the highest-grossing animated release of all time worldwide, that total has largely come from its grosses in mainland China. While its chart placement reveals that North American audiences showed interest, it is far from a smash in the domestic marketplace.
What This Means For Captain America: Brave New World
It Still Has A Way To Climb
Even without adding the grosses from international markets for the weekend, which have yet to be tabulated, this roughly $15 million total from its third frame in the domestic marketplace pushes theCaptain America: Brave New Worldbox officepast the $300 million milestone worldwide. Thisincreases the distance between itself and the two lowest-grossing MCU movies, which are 2008’sThe Incredible Hulk($265.6 million) and 2023’sThe Marvels($199.7 million), the latter of which is a rare MCU bomb, having failed to earn back its reported budget of $374 million.
Captain America: Brave New Worldacts in many ways as a direct sequel toThe Incredible Hulk, returning to characters and storylines introduced in the movie, which was only the second installment in the MCU.
However, the movie still needs to push if it hopes to break even. Its reported $180 million budget means thatits break-even point is most likely somewhere around $450 million, because movies typically need to earn back two-and-a-half times their budgets. While it is entirely possible that it could hit this milestone, it will need to fight against the mixedCaptain America: Brave New Worldreviewsthat have earned it the worst CinemaScore of the entire MCU (B-) and the third-worst Rotten Tomatoes score for an MCU feature (49%), only behindEternals(47%) andAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania(46%).
Our Take On The Weekend Box Office
More Doldrums May Be On Their Way
It is perhaps not surprising that the box office has taken a dip, even with the presence ofCaptain America: Brave New World. The 97th Academy Awards ceremony is set to keep a significant chunk of the moviegoing audience at home on Sunday. However, more doldrums could be on the way, as March is dotted with releases that will likely range between disappointing and middling at the domestic box office, including the Jack Quaid action-comedyNovocaineand thelive-actionSnow Whiteremake. It also remains to be seen how Bong Joon-ho’sParasitefollow-upMickey 17performs in North America.
