In an interview withThe Wrap,Hoffman explained Charles seeing Sazz’s ghost throughoutOnly Murders in the Buildingseason 4, episode 2. The showrunner says that Charles might have taken his relationship with Sazz for granted, and the loss of his friend adds to this weight, which he struggles to process. Hoffman also praised Jane Lynch’s performance, particularly highlighting her work later on in the season. Read his full explanation below:

Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez as Oliver, Charles, and Mabel in Only Murders in the Building season 4 (2024)

I think going into that relationship, which Charles may have taken a bit for granted, and the idea that she could have been mistaken for him. That adds to the weight of it all that he can’t really look at. The only way to process it is with his friend that’s not there anymore. It keeps it light and is beautifully profound, hopefully.

When I talked to Jane Lynch about this terrible turn that was going to happen at the end of Season 3 for Sazz, she lit up. God love her. She just lit up. Wait until you see what’s coming. I just think she’s magnificent in this season. She kills me and is funny but I think she’s doing some of the best work I’ve ever seen her do.

Why Charles Sees Sazz’s Ghost In Only Murders In The Building Season 4, Episode 2

Charles Feels Guilty That He Was Likely The Intended Target

DuringOnly Murders in the Buildingseason 3’s ending, Sazz is shot and killed by an unknown assailant in Charles' apartment. As his stunt double, Sazz looks strikingly similar to Charles, soit’s very likely that she could have been mistaken for him. As Hoffman mentions, this only adds to the grief that Charles is feeling over Sazz’s murder, knowing he was likely the intended target. To make matters worse, Sazz is no longer around for Charles to talk to and help process the grief he is feeling.

In terms of the timeline of the show,Charles and Sazz are one of the oldest relationships between characters, having been his stunt double going back to when he was onBrazzos. In turn, Sazz’s murder adds a more personal element to the show, since none of the past murder victims had significant personal relationships with the three main characters – Charles, Oliver, and Mabel. While Mabel was childhood friends with Tim Kono, they had a falling out before his murder and weren’t friends at the time of his death.
