Daredevil: Born Againneeds to avoid one consistentMCUcostume complaint, and I’m convinced that they will thanks to Charlie Cox’s latest reaction. The MCU has featured its fair share of stellar costumes from spandex suits to mechanized armor. The different levels of heroes call fordifferent types of supersuits, which is why it makes sense that a tech billionaire like Tony Stark would have access to the best equipment while a newbie to the scene like Kamala Khan would don something more homemade. However, no matter the level they’re at, most MCU heroes often receive the same costume complaint.
An MCU hero always seems to get some sort of suit upgrade when they make it big, but that sort of technology just doesn’t fit with every hero. In a recent interview,ScreenRant’s Liam Crowleychatted withBorn Againstars Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio about howDaredevil should turn down any future offers from the Avengers for suit upgrades. Citing that the biggest risk is Daredevil’s mask losing its power, I’m hopeful that Cox and D’Onofrio’s enthusiastic response aboutDaredevil’s suitsets a good precedent for the hero. Read the full excerpt of the interview below:

Liam Crowley:I feel like we all know the Avengers will come calling, eventually. They’re going to likely offer to upgrade your suits, and if they offer, I need you to promise me this: you will decline the nanotech helmet!
Charlie Cox:Oh, okay. Why?
Liam Crowley:Because it doesn’t suit the character! Daredevil wears a mask, it always stays on, and when he takes it off, there’s a power that comes off when you physically take off the helmet. If that just kind of glitches away, it’s not the same.
Vincent D’Onofrio:You’re right. That’s a good point.
Charlie Cox:The street-level heroes always knew that, we always knew that.
The MCU’s Nanotech Costumes Have Been Creating Fan Complaints For Years
Nanotech Suits Are Largely CGI
Ever since the introduction of nanotechnology in the MCU, the studio has loved relying on it as a material for hero suits. Made from microscopic robots called nanites, they can lock together and form any type of structure. The technology makes complete sense for heroes like Iron Man and Black Panther who are known for their technological feats. However, there have been a handful of other MCU heroes who now also rely on nanotech which takes away from the beauty of a physical suit.
Daredevil’s Complete MCU Timeline Explained
Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock has now made several appearances as Daredevil in the MCU, and his previous exploits on Netflix may also be MCU canon.
The nanotech suits manifest at the click of a button, butthe completely CGI suit feels like a lazy cop-out by the studio. Using CGI saves the effort needed to craft a physical costume, but it makes the on-screen look feel disingenuous. The studio is also drawn to the use of nanotech because the suit can easily disappear to reveal the actor. A clear shot of their face is obviously the money shot that matters to some moviegoers, but it doesn’t even make sense in the greater MCU context considering how many are supposed to have secret identities.

Charlie Cox’s Response To The Problems Of A Nanotech Helmet Set A Promising Precedent For The MCU’s Daredevil
The Helmet Represents A Hero’s Identity
When ScreenRant’s Crowley elaborated on why an upgraded suit would not be good for Daredevil, Cox and D’Onofrio seemed to agree. Crowley points out how Daredevil’s mask is key to his costume and to his anonymity. When the hero takes his mask off,it almost acts as a transition between Daredevil and Matt Murdock. If he were to eventually get a nanotech upgrade, having the masksimply glitch away with CGIwould have nowhere near the same effect as Matt physically taking it off.
Cox’s reaction to the nanotech debate has me hopeful about Daredevil’s MCU future. Off the bat, he immediately seemed to grasp why the physical mask is such an important part of a hero’s suit. He stated that it’s something that the street-level MCU heroes are well aware of, and that’s exactly what fans want to hear. Though D’Onofrio does comment that they shouldn’t keep secrets that they can’t keep, the two seem to understand why Daredevil needs to stay away from the nanotech costume trend.

Why It Makes Sense For Daredevil To Avoid The Controversial Costume Trend
Daredevil Is A Street-Level Hero
Just as Cox stated in the interview, Daredevil is a street-level hero who is integral to the human community in New York. He takes on criminals that may be too much for regular law enforcement to handle but also not a big enough threat that the Avengers should be called in. Thestreet-level heroes of the MCUresonate well with audiences becausethey feel like grounded individuals that we’d actually see in our neighborhoods.
It’s not that heroes with advanced technology can’t be grounded or vice versa, but it has to make sense with the individual character. With Daredevil, it just doesn’t make sense with how he operates. Especially as a street-level hero, his secret identity is important while operating in smaller communities. Daredevil is safe from nanotech for now, based on what we’ve seen fromDaredevil: Born Againso far, and knowing that the stars themselves see why this has been such a complaint bodes well for the character’s future development.
