Summary
Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings In Russianis Crunchtroll’ssmash-hit romance animeof the 2024 summer season, currently sitting comfortably atsecond place on My Anime List. It’s a great show with a phenomenally simple premise: what if the cute girl in class confesses her feelings in a language shethinksher crush doesn’t understand, but he secretly does the whole time? It’s straightforward and a great watch the entire time, until the main character’s sister Yuki Suou comes on screen.
Incest is unfortunately a relatively normaltrope in anime. Some series play around with the idea, joke about it, make one character or another uncomfortable, and move on.Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings In Russiantakes it to the next level. Yuki is the main character Masachika Kuze’s blood-related sister, and that doesn’t stop her from toeing the line as closely as possible between a humorous joke and just plain uncomfortable.

Yuki Suou Should Be A Funny Character
She’s Written With The Intention of Being Humorous But She Cames Across As Controversial
Yuki Suoushouldbe a funny character. Her writing is great and the voice actor supporting the character is even better, butthe show takes incest too far. Her character starts out well enough, creating a little bit of tension between Alya and Masachika for fun. Her chaotic energy is at its best in the second episode when she tricks Masachika into embarrassing himself in front of Alya before he knows she is in the room. That’s good, old-fashioned humor that shouldn’t make anyone feel uncomfortable.
What is the best anime to watch right now?
There are a lot of entertaining animes that you can watch right now. I think that My Hero Academia is the best. There are already six seasons and the seventh is currently airing. It is a great exploration of good and evil, with a lovable group of students and their hero mentors, but most importantly, memorable villains. Demon Slayer, Spy x Family, and Chainsaw Man are also some of my favorite animes that I highly recommend.
The show takes a turn, however, when the siblings are alone together at home. Further along in the second episode, Yuki wakes her brother up by laying on him, making him wake up in an understandably bad mood. When the main character asks his sister if she can get off of him, she asks him if it’s"because he has a stiffy", nowhere near a normal joke for a brother and sister to make towards each other.

The Series Brings Yuki’s Character Too Far
At Some Point, a Joke Is No Longer a Joke
The show’s incest theme is at its worst in the fifth episode. Masachika comes home and walks into the bathroom where his sister is just getting out of the shower. Normally, this would be a regular issue, but it turns out Yuki planned on him walking in on her the whole time. She was looking forward to exposing her naked body to her brother,an insane moment the series treats normally.
Yuki then goes on to say that her brother should appreciate his ‘reward’ and that he shouldn’t be upset by what’s going on, anincredibly creepy statement that would sound even worse if the roles were reversed.

Crunchyroll’s Newest Hit Comedy Isn’t Just As Weird As Fans Thought It Would Be… It’s Weirder
The marketing for My Deer Friend Nokotan already made it out to be a bizarre anime, but the actual show somehow takes that even further.
Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings In Russianwould be an all-around great watch if they didn’t take the incest so far. It hasgreat heartwarming moments, but they’re overshadowed by the weird ‘jokes’. While Japanese sensitivity may be different from Western ones, the popularity of shows like these makes fans' complaints about uncomfortable jokes and scenarios more than understandable.
