Warning: Spoilers for The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant episode #1!!
Summary
The accepted ubiquitous personality type of most magical girls is overly bubbly and cute, a trait that’s underscored further by how happy-go-lucky their overall employment is. The only time things change is when they have to get serious during fights.
However, Byakuya isvery cold and aloof, partly because the cute mascot that employed heractually scammed Byakuya in the process, forcing Byakuya to work other part-time jobs to help pay the bills butstill not having enough money for food.

The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Switches Keeping Secrets From Colleagues With Food Insecurity
Based on the four-panel manga series by Cocoa Fujiwara; produced by Bones
As of episode #1, the fact that Byakuya is constantly skipping meals has taken up the majority of the story, since it always results in the affluent titular Evil Lieutenant Mira going out of his way to try and feed or shower Byakuya with money. This is one of the main divergences from this new anime’s predecessor,Love After World Domination. Except for how the good and evil roles are reversed, the main difference between both series is how much Mira and Byakuya’s relationship revolves around Byakuya’s unfortunate monetary situation. As a result,The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used To be Archenemieshasn’t been able to emulate Love After World Domination’s main shtick.
The main form of conflict inLove After World Dominationis the male hero and female villain’s efforts to date each other in secret without their underlings, peers and bosses learning about their relationship. Byakuya and Mira haven’t shown any need to worry about such problems, as of episode #1. Of course, they’ve had much less time to talk about anything else besides Byakuya’s monetary situation. The first episode is only around 10 minutes, which is less than half of the usual anime episode. Even if this dynamic becomes a major theme in future episodes, it definitely won’t be as extreme, especially for Byakuya, whose Kuudere personality type would prevent her from expressing any form of care or fear of getting caught.

For those who are coming into Crunchyroll’sThe Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used To be Archenemieswith nothing to compare it to, the fact that it stars an emotionless, seemingly depressed magical girl will be enough of a draw, since that’s a rare take on such a character, with some exceptions, like inSasaki and Peeps. However, those who are attracted by how similar this new series is to the otherCrunchyrollsuperhero romance,Love After World Domination, will appreciate the similarities, along with the many differences that will keepThe Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used To be Archenemiesfresh.
