Summary

Futurama’s ever-changing title card is one of the show’s hallmarks, but one of the most recent gags to feature under the sitcom’s name cuts a little too close to its own bones. After its second time being brought back from cancelation by another studio, the Hulu era is currently in fullswing after bothFox and Comedy Central axedFuturamaduring the show’s tumultuous history. With theFuturamacastreassembled again, the sci-fi sitcom is being given another chance to right the wrongs of its past. However, the question remains whether a second revival was a good idea.

The title card isFuturama’s self-made opportunity to throw another joke into the mixbefore the episode has officially started. While it can sometimes be a passing reference to the events of the coming story, it’s often unrelated. Alternatively, it’s been known to serve as a meta commentary on the status of the show at that time. The latter is the case forFuturamaseason 12, episode 3, “The Temp,” and it feels very much like a self-aware quip about its recent history.

8 Things That Happen In Every Episode Of Futurama

Futurama’s formula allows several things to happen again and again without feeling stale, with certain repeat events getting funnier each time.

Futurama’s “Product Sold By Weight, Not Quality” Joke Is A Play On The Show’s Risky Multi-Season Renewal

The title card gag in “The Temp” brings to mindFuturama’s latest revival from cancelation purgatory - whether it intends to or not is arguably another matter. Given how perfectly the show came to an end on Comedy Central, the news of Hulu bringingFuturamaback again came as something of a shock. There’s also the consideration thatthe Comedy Central era received a lukewarm reception, with the finale saving it right at the end. Regardless, Hulu didn’t play it safe, and broughtFuturamaback on a multi-season deal.

The quality of the show has undeniably taken a dip sinceFuturama’s heyday, and that decline was noticeable in the Comedy Central era as well.

A Futurama title card that says, “Product sold by weight, not quality”

The quality of the show has undeniably taken a dip sinceFuturama’s heyday, and that decline was noticeable in the Comedy Central era as well. So,it’s surprising that Hulu ordered a two-season revival, and then went on to order two more seasons after a lackluster first season back. So, withFuturamaseason 12 currently airing, and seasons 13 and 14 on the way, it feels very much like it’s being, “Sold by weight, not quality”

Futurama Season 12’s Improvements Make Hulu’s Renewal Decision More Hopeful

Futurama’s future with Hulu seems promising

Futuramaseason 11 continued the same mediocre spell that had been so present before its second cancelation. Fortunately, the show has shown marked improvement sinceFuturamaseason 11’s compelling ending. So far,Futuramaseason 12 has been much funnier than Hulu’s initial run, and it has balanced its high-concept storylines with the show’s signature sense of humor much more effectively. Hopefully,Futuramawill continue to get better and justify Hulu’s multi-season renewals.
