EvenAlberta (Danielle Pinnock) is quick to point out inGhostsseason 4, episode 15 that Sam tends to meddle.During one scene, Alberta says to Sam: “Do that thing you do where you butt in where you’re not wanted, but this time, you’re actually wanted.“Alberta says it in such an excited way, knowing that usually, Sam would be just as excited to get involved.

While Jay has asked her to stop in the past, Sam views herself as doing a good thing, and that’s what makes this trait toxic.

Every time Sam has involved herself in someone else’s business, people were hurt or the B&B and restaurant was put at risk. However, Sam does enjoy some of the meddling, as she gets a chance to feel like part of a group. At the same time, she’s a people-pleaser, which leads to her wanting to help the spirits in the house as much as possible. While Jay has asked her to stop in the past, Sam views herself as doing a good thing, and that’s what makes this trait toxic.

Ghosts season 4 episode 12 followed a largely forgotten character’s story, proving that they remain a pivotal part of the CBS sitcom in the process.

In another example, Sam tries to get Henry (Mark Linn-Baker) to back off Jay’s restaurant renovations, so the work can continue, but a conversation with Margaret (Kathryn Greenwood) causes her to kick Henry out of their house. Henry eventually learns that Sam is the reason; just as he is about to step back from Jay’s restaurant renovations, he starts to cause more problems because of Sam’s involvement in his marriage. If it wasn’t for Thorfinn (Devan Chandler Long) getting information about Henry forgetting his and Margaret’s anniversary, things could have gone terribly wrong forSam and Jay inGhosts.

Earlier in the series,Pete (Richie Moriarty) asks Sam to work on encouraging his daughter, Laura (Holly Gauthier-Frankel), to get married at Woodstone Manor so he can watch it.When he learns that Laura wants to get married on the deck that he’d built, Pete gets Sam and Jay to call the zoning board to report it, knowing that it wasn’t built to regulations. It did work out for Pete and Laura in the end, but Sam had to destroy Laura’s wedding dreams to make it happen.

During season 4, episode 15,Alberta asks Sam to meddle in Alicia’s (Ashley D. Kelley) affairs. After learning that her great-grandniece is getting married to a potential cheater, Alberta wants to stop the wedding. However, Sam refuses to get involved, showing that some character growth is happening. Sam makes it clear she doesn’t know Alicia well enough to be able to say anything about Alicia’s fiancé. By taking a step back, Sam acts more like the owner of a B&B rather than risking having people complain in online reviews about her busybodiness.

Sam then has to get involved while Sass (Román Zaragoza) is the meddler ofGhostsfor this episode, jumping into Alicia’s dream to tell her about Derek. As Sam hears Sass singing, she goes into Alicia’s room and then has to talk her way out of the situation when Alicia wakes up. While this seems like a backward step at the end, Sam is more the victim of circumstance in this situation — and the writers will know that change takes time, and this is something they can build on in the next two seasons ofGhosts.
