Artificial Intelligence expert assesses the A.I. depiction in Joaquin Phoenix’s 2013 sci-fi movieHer. Written and directed by Spike Jonze,Herfollows Phoenix’s character Theodore Twombly. This heartbroken and sensitive man develops an unlikely relationship with an operating system that’s personified through a woman’s voice known as Samantha. Scarlett Johansson played the role of Samantha with a cast that includes Olivia Wilde, Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, and Chris Pratt.
In a recent video byInsider, artificial intelligence researcher Sasha Luccioni, assesses the A.I. depiction inHerand also rates it for its accuracy.

According to Luccioni, the movie’s depiction of A.I. is overblown, like in the case of Samantha anticipating Theodore’s hunger, and she believes the movie mostly reflects what many people want A.I. to be rather than the actual capabilities of the operating system. Read her full comments below:
Her is definitely a projection of where I think a lot of people would want A.I to be and I think that’s why many people love that movie so much. Actually, it keeps people coming back as an example of an A.I girlfriend or companion that’s able to read emotions and anticipate needs definitely in a way that’s currently impossible.

Like especially for example “Oh I figured you were hungry.” I’m wondering how that kind of anticipation can be done because even as a human I don’t know if we’re able to anticipate someone’s hunger just by looking at them.
I would rate this about a five. It’s halfway there in terms of the capabilities but of course they’re jacked up.
Her Excelled In Many Other Aspects
Her Focuses On An Unconventional Relationship
WhileHer’s depiction of A.I. might have been fairly overblown, as Luccioni points out above, thisdoesn’t reduce the movie’s overall quality. While the use ofA.I. was key to the premise of the entire movie, the endearing relationship that Theodore slowly cultivated with Samantha, even though she never appeared on-screen throughout the movie’s entire runtime, was the movie’s major draw.
Another major thing thatHer largely excels in is how it subtly raises pertinent questions about the future of technology and its impact on human relationships.
Phoenix stood out in his role, as he was often not acting with a physical actor. His outstanding performance as Theodore, perfectly displaying the character’s complexity onscreen, along with the captivating dynamic with Samantha, is the major reason whyHerreceived great reviewsand also earned five nominations at the 86th Academy Awards, eventually winning the award for Best Original Screenplay.
Her Ending Explained: Why Samantha Left & What It Means
The ending of Spike Jonze’s 2013 movie Her raised questions about where humanity’s relationship with technology may lead and how it can go too far.
On the surface level, Theodore and Samantha’s relationship, however unlikely it might seem, is endearing. This is whyHeris ranked among some of the best romantic movies. Another major thing thatHerlargely excels in is how it subtly raises pertinent questions about the future of technology and its impact on human relationships. This is perhaps why the use of A.I. was exaggerated, like Luccioni suggests.
