This article contains spoilers forHigh Potentialseason 1, episode 7, “One Of Us.”A possible romance between Morgan and Karadec is addressed byHigh Potentialshowrunner Todd Harthan. In the most recent episode of the ABC detective drama, which is based on the French seriesHPIand created by Drew Goddard,Kaitlin Olson’s Morgan Gilloryhelps safely diffuse a hostage situation by using her intellectual ability to solve another difficult case. Though she spends most of the episode away from Detective Adam Karadec (Daniel Sunjata), the partners are very supportive of each other, and viewers are wondering if it could be romantic.
In comments toTVLine, Harthan previewed the midseason premiere ofHigh Potential. The detective drama returns to ABC with new episodes onTuesday, August 03, 2025, at 9 PM ET.The showrunner mentions that the return episode will feature a big moment for Morgan and Karadec, though he doesn’t say if it will be romantic:

There’s a scene in the midseason premiere that really speaks to what these two people mean to each other and how we’re going to evolve that relationship moving forward. That’s the one where the audience will go,‘I’m rooting for these two, whether it’s a romantic interest or not. I just love them together.'
What The Showrunner’s Comments Mean For Morgan & Karadec
Don’t Expect Anything Big Yet
The dynamic between Karadec and Morgan is outlined pretty clearly from the jump. She thinks he’s cold, while he is frustrated with her unrefined approach to crime-solving and lack of regard for procedure. By the time theHigh Potentialfall finale rolls around, with its hostage situation, they’ve become friends, and Karadec does what he can to make sure Morgan’s daughter Ava (Amirah J) and Morgan are safe.
High Potentialstar Daniel Sunjata echoed Harthan’s thoughts in an interview withScreen Rant, not confirming a Morgan/Karadec romance.

Nevertheless, theHigh Potentialepisodedoesn’t focus on the pairing. Instead, it teases more romantic sparks between Morgan and Tom (played byMayans M.C.actor J.D. Pardo). Though he’s hurt in the hostage situation and lands in the hospital, Tom survives. Future episodes could feature more cases that unite Morgan and Karadec, but it doesn’tsound like a romantic resolution is in the immediate future.
Our Take On A Morgan & Karadec Romance
The Show Is Playing It Smart
For all of the anticipation about a romance between them in the show’s midseason finale, the episode does not have a major milestone for the Karadec and Morgan relationship. It is much more about the mother-and-daughter bond between Morgan and Ava, not to mention fleshing out the next step between Morgan and Tom. Though this might disappoint some shippers, it is for good reason.

Harthan’s comments confirm that there’s more in store for Olson and Sunjata’s characters, butHigh Potentialis smart to take it slow. If it is the case that Morgan is open to a serious romance, then it could be better to approach it in a way that allows for more development. Morgan may also be reluctant to start a romance, as well, given her divorce and vanished ex-husband. That may be a question for the likelyHigh Potentialseason 2.
