Summary
After Dexter seemingly survived inDexter: New Blood, he is set to return in some capacity in the recently annoucned sequel seriesDexter: Resurrection. Several massive surprises forDexterfans occurred at the"Dexter: Original Sin" panel at SDCC 2024, announcing thatMichael C. Hall would be providing voiceover narration as Dexter’s “Dark Passenger"in the highly-anticipated prequel series. It was also revealed thatMichael C. Hall will return to star in anotherDextersequel seriescalledDexter: Resurrection. Dexter’s return in a sequel series after the events ofDexter: New Bloodcomes as even more of a surprise considering how that series ended.
Dexter: Resurrectionis expected to begin filming in January 2025, meaning that it’s more than likely that showrunner Clyde Phillips has already worked out a proper method for convincingly carrying on the torch of Dexter, even after the titular protagonist was already confirmed to be dead atthe end ofDexter: New Blood. It’s entirely possible, but purely speculative, thatDexter could become a Harry-like figment of Harrison’s imagination in the new series, which would be a full-circle way to expand the Dexter narrative. However, apopular fan theory on TikToksuggests a much more interesting way to see the return of Dexter inResurrectionthat, compared to other options, I would love to see.

Dexter Could Survive After New Blood & Be Imprisoned In Resurrection – Fan Theory Explained
Resurrection could place Dexter under the psychoanalytical microscope like never before
Criminal psychologists would want to interview Dexter in prison, adding a compellingMindhunterelement that would place the psyche of Dexter under the microscope.
TheDexterfan theory on TikTok, created by Alex Klett, paints the hypothetical scenario of Dexter Morgan finally getting caught and living life behind bars in federal prison. This concept would add a whole new level of fresh intrigue to the show while giving it a similar vibe to classic prison series such asPrison BreakandOz. This would be much better than a Harrison-focused series, which many Dexter fans, including myself, have already expressed that they don’t want. It would alsogive Dexter’s Dark Passenger free rein as he would no longer have to hide itwithin the confines of the prison. He may actually be revered by other inmates.

Criminal psychologists would want to interview Dexter in prison, adding a compellingMindhunterelement that would place the psyche of Dexter under the microscope. Dexter has always had a self-awareness about him that was mostly restricted to his internal speculations and philosophies through his Dark Passenger voiceover narration.Imagine if a highly-trained criminal psychoanalyst has a vested interest in keeping Dexter alivefor the purpose of research and science. That angle alone would provide a multitude of new ways to explore Dexter’s psychology, which is one of the most fascinating and mysterious aspects of his character.
Upcoming Dexter Sequel Has To Fix This Massive Complaint From New Blood’s Ending 2 Years Ago
Dexter Resurrection has got to bring back David Zayas as Angel Batista after setting up a showdown with Dexter that never happened in New Blood.
Dexter Could Use His Dark Passenger To Kill Other Serial Killers From The Inside
He could even be utilized by the warden to keep peace in the prison
The prison guards presumably wouldn’t have a problem with it seeing as it would make the prison ultimately safer and Dexter would have nothing to lose with his multiple life sentences.
Dexter has always taken justice into his own hands so long as he (for the most part) follows Harry’s code. He could target other notorious serial killers in prison and take them out as he sees fit. The prison guards presumably wouldn’t have a problem with it seeing as it would make the prison ultimately safer andDexter would have nothing to lose with his multiple life sentences. The only thing is that he wouldn’t be able to kill by his traditional method and would have to be much more clever with acquiring methods of murder without his bag of knives and other weapons. It would challenge Dexter’s character to be more creative as a result.

For the sake of entertainment, I thinksomeone higher up at the prison could take note of Dexter’s “duties"and could even allow or encourage it. The hypothetical warden, for example, could use Dexter’s abilities to his or her advantage, perhaps getting rid of the most notorious incarcerated killers who commit murder more frequently than Dexter would. Dexter’s kills would have to be authorized by the warden and he would be granted access and permission unbeknownst to other inmates so that he could protect his identity, killing in stealth. Dexter may not like being told who his targets are, but in prison, he likely would not have much of a choice.
Netflix’s Trending Crime Show From 19 Years Ago Is Perfect To Watch While Waiting For Dexter’s New Spinoffs

Dexter Could Work For The FBI As A Serial Killer Profiler Or Covert Assassin
Dexter could become the FBI’s most formidable secret weapon
It could be too much of a stretch, but highly entertaining nonetheless, if the FBI sent Dexter to do their bidding, killing their biggest threats and continuing his vigilantism from Miami on a national level.
Taking this theory even further, the FBI could make a deal with Dexter and employ him to track down serial killers outside of the prison. It could be too much of a stretch, but highly entertaining nonetheless, if the FBI sent Dexter to do their bidding, killing their biggest threats and continuing his vigilantism from Miami on a national level. Imagine Dexter, the American hero!He could change his name again and use the FBI’s resources while still honoring Harry’s code(even though he broke the first rule of getting caught).

Furthermore, Dexter could avoid a death sentence in Florida by working with the FBI, which would be his “Resurrection” in a sense. Most importantly, the FBI would find his mind and strategic approach invaluable. He could even work once again with Batista who, after potentially catching him, could lobby for Dexter’s value as a serial killer hunter. While Dexter is obviously an experienced and nuanced killer, his greatest skill is spotting other killers in real life as if he has some type of inner radar detection system. The FBI might find Dexter’s rare intuition too valuable to waste in an electric chair.

A Dexter Prison Arc Feels Like An Inevitable & Natural Progression Of The Original Series
Law enforcement has been an integral part of Dexter’s setting
It finally seems like Clyde Phillips and the rest of theDextercreatives have figured out that the show cannot go on without Michael C. Hall, which is a reassuring sign forResurrection.
Dexter has such a deep history with the police, from working for them, having his adoptive dad and sister on the force, and even taking a direct part in LaGuerta and Doakes' deaths. Law enforcement has been an integral part of Dexter’s setting, so seeing him in prison after years of killing seems like the most natural progression of his arc.It would certainly be a surprise to see Dexter seemingly behind bars permanently, but it would add so much intrigue to how Dexter would get out of the situation or work it to his advantage which would ultimately create truly compelling television.

Dexter becoming a prison warden’s friendly neighborhood serial killer or the FBI’s most valuable asset in detecting and tracking other serial killers at large would be a fresh and wildly inventive way to carry his story forward. It finally seems like Clyde Phillips and the rest of theDextercreatives have figured out that the show cannot go on without Michael C. Hall, which is a reassuring sign forResurrection. However,Dexter has to be doing what Dexter does best in order for future seasons to capture the same intensity and suspenseas the original series, which is why the prison fan theory forDexter: Resurrectionis one of my favorites.
