Reddit userAnOnlineHandlewrites that they initially fell in love with the game for its “surprisingly deep and realistic” characters, so they have “mixed feelings about this sudden influx of absurdist joke characters.”

However, others have noted thatthe new characters and their interactions are accurate to real life, especially for those who have worked in retail. They write that in their opinion, “it brings more life into the game — obviously random people will come to the valley to experience what it has.”
The Trout Derby Has A Range Of New Unique NPCs
The Characters Are Varied And Realistic
The new Trout Derby placesStardew Valleyon the map, apparently, as it’s managed to draw in participants from outside of the valley and past Pelican Town. One character even says that he came all the way from someplace called Grampleton for the event. Like in real life, the people who arrive in town for the derby are a mixed bag of personalities.
Players can trigger a secret response from the Trout Derby participants by using mayonnaise to recover energy near the fishing NPCs. Doing so will cause them to exclaim in horror: “Gross… Did you just…? Why?!”

Some, like the Trout Man, just really like fishing. The “famous fishing sisters” for example, plan to “fish as many fish as er wish, nah nah nah!” as they tell the farmer.Several of the participants are really competitive, and others justenjoy the tranquility of the fishing experience. One fisherman in particular is just trying to “enjoy the peace and quiet.” If players keep trying to speak to him, he’ll eventually snap and threaten the player, angrily exclaiming that “someone’s about to get battered, and it ain’t the trout.”
