WARNING: SPOILERS FOR ONE PIECE CHAPTER #1126
Luffy’s Grandpa Garpis easily one of the strongestOne Piececharacters, but the Vice Admiral’s biggest fight during the Egghead Island arc had a surprising outcome that had fans wondering if he is stillalive or dead. Garp officially reveals himself as the Straw Hat Captain’s grandfather after the Eines Lobby incident, arguablyOne Piece’s best arc. He also played a massive role in mentoring several mighty Marines, but one of his students would be his undoing.
Author Eiichiro Oda often teased how strong Monkey D. Garp was, especially with his reputation as the Hero of the Marines. In the past, he teamed up with his longtime nemesis, Gol D. Roger, to help destroy history’s strongest pirate crew, the Rocks Pirates. But since then, he’s helped teach Marines, some of whom grew up to become Admirals. His most promising student, Koby, gets captured to save many innocent lives, but in an attempt to rescue his student,Garp pushes his considerable abilities to his limits, and chapter #1126 finally reveals if he survived his battle.

After Koby was captured and held on the Blackbeard Pirate group’s home base, Fullalead Island, Garp and members of the rogue Marine group SWORD took it upon themselves to rescue him. While the anime showcased Luffy’s grandfather’s entrance with thestrongest attack ever shown inOne Piece, many of Blackbeard’s Titanic Captains prevented Koby’s rescue from succeeding without a hitch. To ensure that Koby and the rest of SWORD could get away, Garp kept them busy. And while the rescue was ultimately a success, it came at a significant cost.
The Hero of the Marines is long past his prime, but he proved himself more than capable against the former Admiral turned pirate, Kuzan. The frighteningly strong Ice-Ice Devil Fruit user was once Garp’s student, and despite their differences, they both held each other in high regard. With the help of several of the most broken Devil Fruit users on Blackbeard’s crew, Kuzan defeats the Vice Admiral, and the battle ends with a giant icicle sticking out of the laughing old man’s chest in chapter #1088.

Koby pleaded that the rescue ships turn around to save his mentor, but the Vice Admiral ordered them to get away from the island as fast as they could. Garp’s sacrifice saved the next generation of Marines, whom he thoroughly believed would be the future of the Navy. The last readers saw of Luffy’s grandpa was him lying on the ground, half-frozen with an ice spike through his chest and a big laugh on his face. However, chapter #1126 finally revealed thatGarp survived his battle against the Blackbeard Piratesand his former student Kuzan.
One Piece Confirms Garp Is Still Alive
It Took Many Of Blackbeard’s Strongest Captains To Subdue Luffy’s Grandpa
The Egghead arc showcased several game-changing events that helped the arc genuinely feel like the start ofOne Piece’s final saga, many of which involved the Blackbeard Pirates, whose Captain seems theclosest to becoming the next Pirate King. Still, Marshall D. Teach was not thrilled to return to see his base in shambles, and many of his captives escaped. Still, his mood shifted dramatically after learning that his bargaining chip to the Navy upgraded from Marine Captain Koby to Vice Admiral Garp, who is now chained up and injured in Fullalead’s prison.
“…if Kuzan isn’t fully committed to his new pirate life, he may help Garp escape.”

Kuzan’s alliance with the Blackbeard Pirates was a shocking twist for manyOne Piecefans, but there is still the possibility that he hasn’t fully turned. He claimed that he believed he’d killed Garp, but despite his grievous injuries, the Vice Admiral is still alive. While the newest Blackbeard Titanic Captain played a massive role in subduing the powerful relic of the past, he’s yet to commit any irredeemable acts. Kuzan could be operating as a deep-cover SWORD member who’ll eventually betray Blackbeard.
30 Strongest One Piece Characters
While One Piece sports a massive ensemble cast, each of their powers are unique and differ in interesting ways. However, a few stand out.
The clash between Garp and Kuzan was an emotional bout because both characters had spent many years training together and shared a similar sense of Justice. However, as Kuzan pointed out during their battle, almosteveryone Garp raised eventually turned against him, except Koby, which added another satisfying layer to the storyline’s intricacies. With Garp still alive, a scene with him and Kuzan has the potential for heartbreaking drama and the chance to explore the complex emotions that must be going through the former high-ranking Marine’s minds.

What Will Be Garp’s Role in One Piece’s Finale
The Vice Admiral May Be Less Helpful Than Blackbeard Anticipates
Kaido was a pirate who was regarded as theOne Pieceworld’s strongest creature who escaped imprisonment multiple times. While Garp is not as strong as Kaido, it would be reasonably easy for Luffy’s grandfather to escape almost any kind of confinement. However, with his injuries and even more of Blackbeard’s powerful crew members now back on the base, Garp escaping Fullalead Island is highly unlikely unless he gets some help.
The reasons why Blackbeard needs a high-ranking Marine hostage are uncertain, but if Kuzan isn’t fully committed to his new pirate life, he may help Garp escape. However, with Dr.Vegapunk’s message bringing attention to the mysterious D. moniker, the World Government might be less likely to make a deal for Monkey D. Garp’s life. Garp has had a tenuous relationship with the world’s leaders, which is why he’s never accepted a promotion. After the events of Egghead, the world’s rulers may be less willing to cooperate with the free-spirited personalities who happen to sport the letter D. in their names.
The Vice Admiral captive has a fewOne Piececharacters who may want to save him. While Luffy did have a strong bond with his grandfather, it’s unlikely that news of Garp’s disappearance will divert the Straw Hats' journey to Elbaf and find Roger’s treasure. And news of the Straw Hat crew’s progress reinvigorated Koby’s desire to confront Luffy in what could beOne Piece’s most heartbreaking battle, instead of working to rescue his mentor. Still, author Eiichiro Oda has plans for Garp beforeOne Pieceends; otherwise, his storyline would have ended with his emotionally poignant sacrifice.
One Piece
Created by Eiichiro Oda, One Piece is a multimedia franchise that began as a manga series and follows the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates as led by Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy, an enthusiastic pirate with a thirst for adventure, is afflicted by a mysterious curse that gives him various powers he uses to protect himself and his friends. The manga eventually gave way to the anime series, with the two being some of history’s longest-running anime and manga series. Along with over fifty video games made over the years, the series entered the live-action world with Netflix’s 2023 adaptation.
