James Cameron has announced an exciting new addition to theAvatarcast, and though I can’t wait to see her on-screen, I’m disappointed that I have to wait five years for her introduction. After the release ofAvatar: The Way of Water, which released 13 years after the originalAvatar,James Cameron released his plan for the franchise’s future. There will not only be anAvatar 3, but a fourth and fifth film as well.Avatar 6and7may also happen, though without Cameron. Either way, there will be plenty ofAvatarin the coming years.
At this point, there isn’t too much information aboutAvatar 3or its consequent sequels. Cameron recently revealed thatAvatar 3would be titledAvatar: Fire and Ash,and furthermore, that it’s slated for release on July 28, 2025. However, the director and his crew did hint at who might be joining the franchise later on. In 2021, a photo from theAvatar 3set revealed that actress Michelle Yeoh was present. This led many to believe that Yeoh would be appearing in the nextupcomingAvatarmovie. However, I’m sad to report that this is not the case.

Michelle Yeoh Won’t Appear In The Avatar Franchise Until Avatar 4
Who Michelle Yeoh Could Be Playing
As it turns out, Michelle Yeoh will not be appearing in theAvatarfranchise untilAvatar 4.At this summer’s D23 Convention, James Cameron toldEntertainment Weeklythat, despite what the 2021 Instagram implied, Yeoh “won’t be in 3. She’s in 4 and 5.“The main reason for this mix-up was thatCameron has been filming hisAvatarsequels at the same time. During the filming ofAvatar: The Way of Water,Cameron was also shooting parts ofAvatar: Fire and Ash,andAvatar 4.That explains why Yeoh was on set, despite not being a part ofAvatar 3.
Avatar 5
June 24, 2025
Though I am disappointed that Michelle Yeoh will not be starring inAvataruntil 2029, I already have my next question at the ready: who will Michelle Yeoh play? Considering thatAvatar: Fire and Ashis still a year away, it is impossible to know where the franchise is going. However, based onAvatar: The Way of Water,I have some ideas. Perhaps Yeoh will portray the leader ofanother Na’vi tribe, similar toThe Way of Water’sRonal and Tonowari. There is also the chance that Yeoh will play a human character, like Stephen Lang’s Colonel Quaritch.
Michelle Yeoh’s Character Is Hugely Exciting For The Avatar Franchise
What Michelle Yeoh Brings To Avatar
Regardless of when she enters the franchise,Michelle Yeoh’sAvatarcharacteris incredibly exciting. Yeoh already enjoyed a successful career throughout the 1980s, 90s, and 2000s, but she recently made a significant resurgence in the 2022 film,Everything Everywhere All At Once.Avatarwon’t even be her next massive project. Yeoh is also starring in the upcoming movie musicals,WickedandWicked Part Two.In this way,Yeoh is bringing a notable star power toAvatar.I think the franchise definitely needs this if it wants to continue succeeding for another decade or more.
AfterAvatar: The Way of Water,I am definitely excited by Sully’s children and their futures, and hopefully, afterAvatar 4premieres in 2029, I will feel the same way about Yeoh’s character.

Aside from fame, Michelle Yeoh also brings change toAvatar. For two movies, audiences have been invested in the story of Jake Sully, Neytiri, and their family. However, considering the large hiatuses between movies, it may be hard to keep audiences interested. Therefore, the addition of Michelle Yeoh keepsAvatarfresh. Viewers need new characters to latch onto and get excited by. AfterAvatar: The Way of Water,I am definitely excited by Sully’s children and their futures, and hopefully, afterAvatar 4premieres in 2029, I will feel the same way about Yeoh’s character.
James Cameron Must Be Really Confident In Avatar 3 To Save Yeoh Until The Sequel
How James Cameron’s Plan Makes Avatar Better
The one thing I can’t get over is the fact that James Cameron is savingMichelle Yeoh forAvatar 4.Of course, theAvatarfranchise includes some of the highest-grossing movies of all time, but there is still a definite risk of failure. If Cameron drops the ball onAvatar: Fire and Ash,that could put the entire franchise on hold. Yet,Cameron is seemingly confident enough in his projects that he can delay Yeoh’s introduction. He seems to know thatAvatar: Fire and Ashwill be good enough to warrantAvatar 4and beyond.
James Cameron has said thatAvacould continue with a sixth and seventh movie, although he would likely not direct the films.

Ultimately, I thinkAvataris on a strong track. Michelle Yeoh’s casting is thrilling, but also makes me excited to see who else will be joining the franchise. Furthermore, I am impressed by James Cameron’s firm planning. Though his grand plans may seem like a lot, they tell me that he has put abundant thought into this franchise and where it is headed. I can only hope that these plans are just as fantastic as the first twoAvatarfilms.
