Peacemakerseason 1 ended with a pretty monumental cameo from the DCEU Justice League, but James Gunn’s recent comments suggest season 2 can find a way forward. Like many, I absolutely lovedPeacemakerseason 1. The show was hilarious from start to finish, and the exploration of those characters was incredibly compelling with drama, heartache, and epic dancing. So, whenPeacemakerseason 2 was confirmed to take this series into theDCU, I was incredibly pleased.

However, it’s worth noting that the show really did establish its roots in the DCEU. Not only did John Cena’s Peacemaker come from another DCEU film,TheSuicide Squad, but theseason 1 finale featured an impressive cameo scenewith the four core members of theDCEU Justice League. While Gadot and Cavill’s characters were silhouettes, indicating neither actor actually appeared for the cameo, both Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller have brief spoken lines in the episode. But James Gunn seems to suggest there is a ways around this.

I’m So Interested To See How Peacemaker Season 2 Navigates Season 1’s DCEU Justice League Cameo

The Justice League Cameo Needs To Be Addressed

The big question of canon has been raised a lot when it comes to the DCEU versus the DCU. WhileGunn has said that the DCU is a complete reboot, this has been further complicated by the inclusion of a property likePeacemaker, and other comments about when things are referenced, that is the DCU canonizing past events. This self-actualization appears to loosen the rules a lot, but Gunn has since clarified that almost the entirety ofPeacemakeris canon, except for the Justice League cameo.

He then went on to suggest that in the next season, they will “deal” with that, indicating that there is a plan for the series to clarify this line in some way. Gunn has been very vocal and forthcoming about answering fan questions on social media, but it may be that the actualanswers about canon and thecrossover from DCEU to DCUwill not be made clear until a show likePeacemakerreveals more details. However, the suggestion from Gunn’s comments could already be hinting at something.

James Gunn’s Peacemaker Season 2 Comments Suggest The Show Will Explain How The DCEU Justice League Appeared In The Now DCU Show

There May Be A Logical Reason For The DCEU Justice League’s Appearance

Personally, having been a fan of a lot of Gunn’s other work, and seeing his talent for comedy and creativity when it comes to storytelling, I believe he cando something clever to address the cameo. By explicitly stating that they intend to “deal” with it, it feels as though there is some element of the cameo that can break through the DCU barrier forPeacemakerseason 2. Gunn’s talents as a writer means he’s certainly capable of handling it.

However, it does not explicitly mean that the show will be tasked with dealing with the cameo. Obviously, at this early stage in the DCU’s development, with no feature-length films and a handful of animated and live-action shows on the horizon, there is a lot of ground to cover and many more opportunities to discuss canon. There is also theexistence of DCU Elseworlds, which could provide another route for Gunn topush this moment out of the primary timeline, and into a more loosely defined and creatively open space.

How Peacemaker Season 2 Could Explain The Previous DCEU Justice League Cameo

Peacemaker Season 2 Has A Tough Job

My hopes are on Gunn employing his comedy writing talents, and using the characters to explain away the cameo within the show. Something as simple as they were all high, or not in their right minds, could feel too low an effort, but using the narrative from season 1, such as the alien invasion, to explain it could be more satisfying. Thecharacters may also have a self-aware momentwhere they address a reality-altering event that means their world is just slightly different from before.

A simple, but likely effective way to do it, would be simply playing out a flashback, with Peacemaker carrying Emilia as before, but instead of walking past the Justice League and telling them they’re late, the scene could be altered to exclude the cameo, and see Peacemaker drop another funny line about the lack of backup. In a dar less satisfying alternative, it’s possible thatPeacemakerseason 2will avoid discussing it, and Gunn will simply make an announcement ahead of time to say that the cameo is officially no longer canon.
