With aSmallvillesequel TV show in very early development, James Marsters reflects on potentially coming back as theDCcharacter Brainiac. One of the most belovedlive-actionSupermanTV shows(and superhero properties in general) is theSmallvilleseries, which centered on the early years of the Man of Steel before becoming the DC icon everyone knows and loves. One of the majorSuperman villainsthat ended up getting to take on Krypton’s last son was Brainiac, played by Marsters, fromSmallvilleseason 5 until its end.

Screen Rantrecently interviewed Marsters for his new movieAbruptio, and asked about his legacy as Brainiac inSmallville. Since Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum are developing an animated sequel series, Marsters was asked if he would be open to reprising the role of Brainiac or Brainiac 5 (who shows up inSmallvilleseason 10). Not only does Marsters callSmallvillethe"most intelligent character" depiction of Superman, but he would love to come back for the sequel, sharing the following:

Clark Kent talking to Brainiac in Smallville.

James Marsters: Oh, yes, definitely. Definitely.I think that Smallville was the most intelligent character version of Superman that I’ve ever seen. Superman is a very difficult character to write because he’s invulnerable. Heroism is when I help somebody, even when I have to sacrifice something to help them. That’s the definition, and when you have a hero movie, you have the very most exciting part [which] is when the hero has to risk his life to save someone or help someone. And that’s just impossible with Superman. He’s invulnerable. He’s going to be fine unless you pull out Kryptonite. Every Superman movie does that.

There’s Kryptonite somewhere, and he’s got to risk death to do his thing. But with the television series, you can’t pull out Kryptonite every week. It gets redundant so fast. It gets cheesy. They sidestepped all that by not focusing on Clark’s physical vulnerability, which there is almost none of. It was all about the fact that he was a teenager and he was vulnerable to everything, and they could explore [the] emotional vulnerability for Superman. I just thought, ‘Okay, you’ve solved it. That’s what to do.’ And they were able to go ten years on that show and not be redundant, not be repetitive. Following that,I would love to do more of that.

What James Marsters' Comments Mean For The Smallville Sequel Show

From Marsters' comments about his time onSmallville, it is clear that he had such a great time during his original run. Even if he may not be attached right now, there is no reason Welling and Rosenbaum’s project couldn’t recruit him down the line.It all depends on Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios when it comes to aSmallvillesequel,as they are currently focusing on James Gunn’s new DC Universe. With the material that exists inSmallvilleseason 11(the official tie-in comic book), which featured Brainiac 5, there are a lot of exciting directions they could take with his character.

Marsters is one of several actors fromtheSmallvillecastwho have shown enthusiasm to reprise their character ever since Rosenbaum and Welling started talking about their development of the sequel. Despite the fact that it has been almost 15 years since theSmallvilleseries finale aired,it says a lot that many of these actors are still open to revisiting this version of Superman. With the audience also still being stronger than ever, time will tell if Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios will reviveSmallville.

Our Take On James Marsters' Smallville Return Comments

With Marsters' being one of the best talents thatSmallvilleever cast, especially for an iconic character like Brainiac, it would absolutely be a huge deal to see him being part of the sequel series if it comes to fruition. Given how he was last seen as Brainiac 5, there are plenty of stories they can explore with him inaSmallvillesequel TV showwhile also potentially introducing a new version of his evil Brainiac character down the line. Hopefully, DC Studios will find a place for theSmallvilleanimated sequel series sooner rather than later.
