Joe Proctor was a major character on the Starz crime drama series,Power, and his death came as a shock to viewers and his actor, Jerry Ferrara, has long had thoughts about his character’s exit from the show.Poweris filled with an ensemble cast of characters who are all vying for one form or another of what the title of the show professes. Whether it’s by striving for their own glory or riding the coat tails of powerful figures like Ghost (Omari Hardwick) or Tommy (Joseph Sikora), everyone wants a piece of the power pie.
One of thebest of these characters inPoweris Joe Proctor, the talented and striving defense attorney for Ghost who also served as a pseudo-consigliere. Proctor first appeared in season 2, episode 8, “Three Moves Ahead”, and quickly moved into the main cast in season 3. By seasons 4 and 5,Proctor was practically one of the main characters until he was killed off. One of the characters fromPowerwho could have benefited from a spinofflikePower Book II: Ghost. Proctor instead ended his time on the show the way he lived it, with plenty of violence.

Joe Proctor Was Fatally Shot By Tommy In Power’s Final Season
Tommy Overheard Proctor Giving Up Tommy As Angela’s Killer
InPowerseason 6, the final season of the show, the walls start closing in on Proctor, Tommy, and the rest of the cast as their past crimes finally come back for a reckoning. Tommy, who had fatally shot Angela Valdez (Lela Loren) in the previous season, now has his head on the chopping block. In episode 5, “King’s Gambit”, Proctor is put into an impossible situation, where he’s coerced to name someone for Angela’s death, pressured to say it was Ghost. Refusing to sell him out,he tells the truth and reveals it was Tommy who did the killing.
Power Ending Explained: Why Tariq Killed Ghost
After six acclaimed seasons, Power came to an end in 2020 by resolving its season-long whodunit premise. But why did Tariq kill Ghost in the finale?
Tommy overhears this conversation and goes after Proctor, and the pair engage in an extended gunfight. Eventually, Tommy corners Proctor, who looks Tommy in the eyes and says, “This isn’t f**king over,” before he’s shot multiple times and dies. It’s a brave death, and one that lets Proctor go out with some dignity. His death is maybe the most major one in the series since Angela, and signals that at this point in the show, anyone can go.

Joey Still Fondly Remembers His Time On Set
While Joey Ferrara knew that he probably wouldn’t make it to the end ofPower, he was still emotional when he got the news about Proctor’s death (viaEW),
“…I’ve never necessarily felt safe, but then you make it a certain amount of time and you’re like, ‘Oh, maybe I’m going to see the end of this thing.’… My whole thought had been, ‘When it comes for me, I’m going to take it like a soldier. I’m not going to show that I’m upset.’ And then I got upset in the room. [Laughs] I was like, ‘Aw man, why now? It couldn’t be three more episodes?’

Powerwas one of Ferrara’s biggest roles since he starred inEntourageas Vinny Chase’s (Adrian Grenier) friend and driver, Turtle. Clearly, it was a role that meant a lot to him. Even years after the series' finale, Ferrara still fondly remembers his time on the show, posting onXabout how he wished he had lived just so he could’ve appeared on-screen with Method Man, who appeared in the spinoff series,Power Book II: Ghostas Davis Maclean.
As for his overall feelings of his time time onPower, Ferrara said,

“I just went in with a totally open heart and I was so welcomed. I’ve felt respected before but it was the first time I felt almost showered with respect… Just thank God that I stayed true to who I was, because look where it led me. I’m just grateful and relieved that I was able to do it, and I still am a little nervous for life without it… I think Power really does have the best fans on TV. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
