The Continental: From the World of John Wick, receives a disappointing season 2 update from its producer. Created by Greg Coolidge, Kirk Ward, and Shawn Simmons,The Continentalpremiered on Peacock in September 2023, and starred Colin Woodell, Mel Gibson, Mishel Prada, and Jessica Allain. The show explores the background of the character Winston Scott - portrayed by Ian McShane in theJohn Wickfilm series - and how he came to be the proprietor of the New York Continental. Despite being conceived as a miniseries, hopes were high thatThe Continentalseason 2would advance the story further.

In an interview withThe Direct, producer Basil Iwanyk discusses the potential future of the franchise, andcasts doubt on the possibility of a season 2ofThe Continental. He reflects positively on the season that was produced, but thinks future spinoffs will go in a different direction. He speaks positively about expanding theJohn Wickuniverse further in the coming years. Check out Iwanyk’s full comments on the matter below:

I think we were happy with season one. I think that we talked a little bit about season two. But I think the feeling is, if we’re going to have something on television in the John Wick universe, this Robert Levine version that we went out with, that we’re negotiating with somebody, is probably the better option for the John Wick content in the TV world.

So, I loved making [The Continental]. I love[d] the 70s of [it][. I loved Albert Hughes. Everything about it. I think it was a really cool, crazy idea for it. I think now we want to put together something that is going to inform more of what the future of the franchise is going to be, yeah.

What These Comments Mean For The Continental & John Wick

It’s Likely The Story Will Continue Via Other Means

As Iwanyk’s comments seem to suggest, the creative team behindThe Continentalfeel the story has run its course and served its purpose by casting more light on Winston’s backstory. However, for the franchise to evolve, it seems as though Iwanyk and the other producers feel it needs to take theJohn Wickfranchisestory forward. IfThe Continentalhad spanned a10-episode season 1, as was originally the plan, rather than the event series of three 90-minute episodes, there’s a chance it could have spawned a season 2, but it seems as though things might have run their course in terms ofJohn Wick-related prequels.

…it was decided that the planned sequel showJohn Wick: Under the High Table, produced by Robert Levine, should be the choice to take the franchise forward

Iwanyk mentions that discussions for season 2 of the show did take place, butit was decided that the planned sequel showJohn Wick: Under the High Table, produced by Robert Levine, should be the choice to take the franchise forwardon the small screen. Lionsgate recently announced the show, which will take place following the events ofJohn Wick 4. While Reeves is not expected to appear, other actors from the franchise could return, but it’s unlikely any ofThe Continentalcast will feature.

Our Verdict On The Future Of The John Wick Franchise

The Franchise Could Develop Several Future Projects

Despite the disappointing update forThe Continentalseason 2, it is a potentially exciting time for theJohn Wickfranchise. The success ofJohn Wick 4has led to the development ofJohn Wickspinoff movieBallerina, as well as plans for a potential Caine spinoff movie. Then there are multipleJohn Wick 5theories, and there is the possibility of the movie happening at some point in the future. In terms of small-screen adaptations,Under the High Tablelooks likely that it will be the next project to continue the canonical story from the movies, and hopes will be high that it can perform better thanThe Continental.
