Summary

Kong’s journey throughGodzilla vs. KongandGodzilla X Kong: The New Empirehas given him a more important role in the Monsterverse, but until a major change is made in how he’s portrayed, he can never be the King of the Monsters. Legendary’s Monsterverse began with 2014’sGodzilla, but it has slowly morphed into an exploration of where Kong fits into the global hierarchy of Titans with Godzilla established as the Alpha Titan and King of the Monsters. The two have developed an uneasy truce byGodzilla X Kong’s ending, but it may not stay that way for long.

Unfortunately for Kong, the way that he’s been treated in the Monsterverse has prevented Kong from ever becoming a true King of the Monsters. While the end ofGodzilla X Kongsaw him become a king inthe Hollow Earth, the surface world still belongs to Godzilla. Any potential sequel toGodzilla X Kongwill undoubtedly bring the two Titans together again, and while he has been the central Titan in the last two movies, he will still be playing second fiddle to Godzilla.

Dan Stevens addresses whether he is open to returning to the world of titans and monsters as Trapper in future movies following Godzilla x Kong.

The Monsterverse Keeps Holding Kong Back

He continues to get help in his biggest battles

While Godzilla has proven himself to be the baddest Titan in the universe (so far), Kong has been held back in every appearance he’s made. In bothGodzilla vs. KongandGodzilla X Kong,Kong needed a weapon to have any chance of even surviving a battle with Godzilla, much less stand a chance of beating him outright. InGodzilla v. Kong, his battle axe was necessary to block Godzilla’s atomic breath and deliver blows that might actually do some damage to the massive lizard, and in Godzilla X Kong he was giventhe B.E.A.S.T. glove to augment his strength.

Kong has also required the help of humans on multiple occasionsto survive his clashes with other Titans, especially against Godzilla. InGodzilla vs. Konghe needed humans to distract Godzilla and help him “play dead” so that Godzilla wouldn’t finish him off, and he even needed the Monarch team to injure the Warbat who had him in its clutches in order to survive. InGodzilla X Kong, he was given the B.E.A.S.T. glove and a zero-gravity assist from the Hollow Earth Iwi tribe in the first part of the final battle against Skar King and Shimo.

Despite The BEAST Glove, Godzilla x Kong Was A Step In The Right Direction

Kong beat multiple enemies and became a king

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empireat least made progress in terms of making Kong a true King of the Monsters. While he was given another weapon,he was able to beat Skar King on his own in their first encounter, and largely defeated him on his own in their final battle on the surface, with Shimo helping to provide the killing blow. He also killed the deadly Drownviper on his own as he and Suko journeyed across the Subterranean Realm, and was head and shoulders stronger than any of the other Great Ape titans under Skar King’s control.

The Drownviper follows a tradition throughout King Kong movies, as Kong has fought some sort of snake in four movies beforeGodzilla X Kong: The New Empire.

Kong sign language Godzilla vs. Kong

As it stands in the Monsterverse afterGodzilla X Kong, Kong has earned his “King” title, as he is poised to rule benevolently over the Hollow Earth. Having freed both Shimo and the Great Apes of the Subterranean Realm,he has earned the genuine respect and admiration of other Titans, even if he doesn’t have the true physical/psychological dominance that the Alpha Titan typically has. It’s a step in the right direction for Kong’s potential as King of the Monsters, but as long as Godzilla is the Alpha Titan on the surface, he can never truly hold that title.

The Monsterverse Should Take Away Kong’s Weapons For Godzilla vs. Kong 3

Kong needs to prove he doesn’t need help to be an Alpha Titan

If the Monsterverse truly wants to treat Kong as its “main character” and as the King of the Monsters, it needs to totally change the way it approaches his position in the world. At the end ofGodzilla X Kong, Kong is equipped with his B.E.A.S.T. glove, his battle axe, an army of Great Ape titans at his beck and call, and the loyalty of one of the most powerful Titans in the history of the world in Shimo. The Monsterverse needs to strip away all of Kong’s weapons and alliesand have him prove that he is the King of the Monsters.

If Kong can take down an enemy that Godzilla couldn’t with no help, he would earn the King of the Monsters title.

Godzilla x Kong The New Empire Film Poster

He and Godzilla have now teamed up multiple times to take down threats that would likely have been too much for either of them to handle alone, but inGodzilla X Kong: The New Empirehe was still no match for Godzilla’s atomic breath without a weapon. By stripping away his weapons, the Monsterverse can have him take down a truly lethal enemy without Godzilla’s help; it doesn’t need to be Godzilla he defeats directly, but if he can take down an enemy that Godzilla couldn’t with no help, he would earn the King of the Monsters title.
