The Merc With the Mouth returns in Deadpool 2, “the sequel to the first one.” Wade Wilson finds himself alone and without purpose until he reluctantly agrees to join the X-Men. Things take a turn for the strange when Wade finds himself in prison after trying to help a young mutant named Russell, and a time-traveling mutant cyborg arrives to slay Russell to save the future. Determined to save Russell and do the right thing, Wade creates a new team of heroes to fight back and save the world the only way Deadpool knows how - as ridiculously as possible.
Vanessa’s arc inDeadpool 2sparked some controversy, as she dies in the first few minutes of the film, pushing Wade down a path of vengeance and despair for the remainder of the story. Though she does appear in different moments encouraging Wade to keep going and fight for what’s right,her role in this film is much smaller than in the first installment of the franchise.However, every moment she spends onscreen is memorable, and without her, Wade would have no motivation to continue on his adventures.
However, using the death of a wife or girlfriend as the catalyst for a hero’s development is a well-worn trope, and some critics argue it wasn’t the best use of Vanessa’s character.
