One seemingly impossible story in the modernStar Warscanon reveals that a Jedi Knight and a Sith Lord could befriend one another. The Jedi and Sith are, as theStar Warsfranchise makes abundantly clear, ancient enemies with a long and bloody history of conflicts with each other. Thefirst Sith Lordsin bothStar Warscontinuities were fallen Jedi who eventually developed their own distinct culture, religious beliefs, and code of conduct, though they would appropriate and alter elements of Jedi culture, such as their use of lightsabers.
The Jedi and the Sith have fundamentally incompatible goals and views, with the Sith seeking to conquer the galaxy and impose their will – and the corruption of the dark side of the Force – on all systems, while the Jedi seek to serve the Force, the people of the galaxy, and democratic institutions like theGalactic Republicas protectors. The Jedi and Sith each see each other as the ultimate obstacle to their respective goals, so it is hardly surprising that there are almost no instances of Jedi and Sith friendships.
One Shocking Jedi Legend Features A Jedi & Sith Friendship
All It Takes Is One Quick Line
Perhaps the only instance of a friendship between a Jedi and Sith being entertained as a concept is in a 2014 short story.The End of History, by Alexander Freed and Chris Scalf, is set during the reign of theGalactic Empirein the modernStar Warscanon, centering on a Corellian Resistance member and an antique dealer. The antique dealer, Antron Bach,makes a throwaway reference to a story about Jedi Master Vonkhel forming an unlikely friendship with the Sith Lord of Gairm. No other details regarding the pair have been revealed, yet the story’s premise is undeniably fascinating.
Could A Friendship Between A Jedi & A Sith Ever Work?
They Have Different Ways Of Life, Not Just Different Opinions
Given the history and culture of Jedi and Sith in bothStar Warscontinuities, one may wonder how it is possible for a Jedi and Sith to befriend each other. While it is easy to imagine a Jedi attempting to reason with a Sith and treat them with kindness, it is difficult to picture a Sith Lord seeing a Jedi as anything more than a useful pawn, at best.Inevitably, a “friendship” between a Jedi and Sith would inevitably endin the Jedi falling to the dark side, the Sith abandoning the dark side, or the two battling each other.
Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade fell in love, as did Ben Skywalker and Vestara Khai, but both Mara and Vestara soon lost faith in the Sith.
The story provides no context for their friendship, and both the Legends and modern canon continuities do include technical instances of Jedi and Sith friendships (or at least partnerships). In the Legends continuity, the Sith Lord Scourge is a “friend” of sorts to the Jedi Hero ofTythoninStar Wars: The Old Republic, with the two sharing the goal of killing Tenebrae. In the modern canon’sStar Wars: The Clone Wars, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Count Dooku briefly work together to escape captivity. In bothStar Warsinstances,it is more of a temporary partnership than true friendship.
