Author Greg Broadmore – whose fantasy pedigree includes behind the scenes work on Peter Jackson’sLord of the Ringsfilms, design work for theGodzillafranchise, and more recently, stellar cover art work forConan the Barbarian– islaunching a new “dark fantasty” from publisher Mad Cave Studios, entitledOne Path.

Screen Rant is thrilled to share the exclusive first look atOne Pathfrom Broadmore, Andy Lanning, and Nick Boshier which follows its eponymous character, who according to Mad Cave’s press release announcing the book is a member of a “tribe of cavegirls.”

One Path #1 cover, the hero of the book holds a spear and faces off against a T-Rex.

As with all great sci-fi and fantasy, from Frank Herbert’sDunebooks to Tolkein’sLord of the Ringsitself,One Pathwill be rooted in the author’s sociological meditations, which will serve to make the book more than just an action-adventure saga, but also an important entry in the discourse about “progress versus tradition.”

One Path– By Greg Broadmore, Andy Lanning & Nick Boshier

In its initial synopsis forOne Path, Mad Cave Studios described the upcoming graphic novel this way:

Hunted by giant primordial beasts, red in tooth and claw, a tribe of cavegirls scratch out a bleak existence in a brutal uncaring world. They cling onto a life where not many make it beyond the first few months, let alone to adulthood. Governed by ancient laws and arcane rituals - the only constants they have - they follow the old ways of pain of death.

One Path #1, One Path finds a stream and drinks from it.

But One Path, a hunter and warrior, has a plan to change their lives. To free them from the toll the great predators that stalk them charge, and it will overturn everything they know. Sometimes change is scarier than death.

This intriguing premise suggests that the series will be an intriguing collusion of high-concept fantasy and grounded ideas of pre-civilized humans and their discontents. Telling a story about the deepest recesses of pre-history is a fantastical challenge, but it is one Greg Broadmore is amply prepared to tackle. The preview pages forOne Pathsuggest a world where early humans and dinosaurs co-mingle, though beyond that, readers will have to wait to discover what horrors and thrills the world of the series contains.

The mention of “ancient laws and arcane rituals” is particularly intriguing, because it alludes to the idea that this story is set within the context of the earliest human societies taking shape. Though the presence of dinosaurs makes it clear this is not a strictly historical setting,it sets the stage for a rich, detailed dive into the themes and concepts that Broadmore intends to engage with inOne Path, which the author describes as a book he “felt a deep primal urge to release.”

One Path #1, One Path is startled and raises her spear as she drinks from a stream.

“One Path” Is A “Primal” Story That Tackles Contemporary Issues In A Prehistoric Setting

Greg Broadmore describedOne Path, his new graphic novelproject from Mad Cave Studios, like this:

One Pathis a savage and brutal story, one that I felt a deep primal urge to release—I didn’t really understand where it was coming from as it seemed to tumble out of a deep subconscious, unasked for. It’s a story of raw animal violence, and the grim bleakness of life on the edge of survival, but also of family, and unbreaking love - and ancient traditions that might need breaking… or might not. It is deeply personal to me but hopefully contains truths many people can relate to.

One Path #1, One Path is confronted by a raptor in the woods.

Broadmore’s account of the genesis of his new story is fascinating, and it is especially apropos for a tale about humanity at its most unfettered, unvarnished. Yet at the same time, the emphasis that the series' creator and publisher both put on the idea of “tradition” and the “status quo” is a reminder that this story is less concerned with the actual earliest days of humankind, andmore with using that time period and setting to examine vital questions about modern human life.

That is, the dynamic of “progress versus tradition” has been one of the driving tensions of human civilization for thousands of years – but it is as urgent a topic as ever in the modern world. While some authors might explore the far future to engage with this critical dichotomy, Greg Broadmore has opted for the darkest recesses of the past, one where the traditions and values of its characters are being actively forged by the merciless “state of nature” that they exist within.

“One Path” Is Immediately One Of The Most Exciting Independent Comic Releases Of The Next Year

Author Greg Broadmore Takes Readers On An Incredible Journey

One Pathauthor Greg Broadmore’s excitement about his project is palpable from his introductory comments about the series, as is his love for the comic book medium in general. Broadmore also expressed a deep appreciation forpublisher Mad Cave Studios’commitment to the book. As he explained in the initial press release:

I’ve had the pleasure of working on some of the most incredible films, and helped make some of the most bleeding-edge tech in video games - but for me, nothing compares to the power and purity of making comics. It’s the medium I always return to—one where I feel most creatively liberated. And this time I had the wisdom and combined superpowers of Andy Lanning (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Nick Boshier (Moth Effect) to help me craft it and take it to the next level—

Mad Cave Studios is bold—and perhaps a bit crazy (fitting, given the name)—for taking a chance on what must have seemed like a wild vision. Their commitment to creators and unique storytelling makes them the perfect partner, and I’m thrilled they gave this world of feral cave girls and devouring dinosaurs a place to call home—a Mad Cave.”
