Vivienne Medrano Explained Knowing The Cast “Changed The Way We Wrote The Characters” In Season 2

I cannot get enough of the show. I need the second season immediately. Congratulations on season 3 and 4 renewal. Vivienne, so many characters have been a part of your life for so long. How have they evolved as other creatives, like voice actors, writers, directors, have gotten involved?

Vivienne Medrano: I feel like now, especially with the cast, I think there’s a piece of the cast in the characters now. Now that we not only know who’s playing them and everything. Going into writing season 2 was really fun because we knew the cast, we knew what you guys were up for, what we might be able to push and all those things. And so I think there’s a very natural progression of you guys understand your characters more too.

So there was even more playing around that could be had because there was an element of not only knowing the actual person behind the voice and what we could ask for, but also just knowing what you did in season 1. So big shout to the cast. Cause I do think that changed the way we wrote the characters a little bit. It always helps to kind of have the voice in your head, and so I think that also helped. So yeah, that was, I think, a huge thing.

Erika Henningsen: It also helped us because we didn’t record together. So when we got to see season 1 and we kind of figured out like, Oh, that’s what Sir Pentious sounds like, or That’s how Angel Dust experiences this emotion. It just kind of made recording, even though we were still separate, you could kind of have an idea of, Oh, I bet Amir says this line like that. So let me try to match that energy, which was cool. You kind of start to speak a weird secret language amongst your castmates and amongst your creator too.

Erika Henningsen’s Favorite Thing About Charlie Is Her “Toughness And Stubbornness And Reality And Fight”

Erika, you’ve said that “Ready For This” is kind of when Charlie comes into her own as a leader, as the princess of Hell. What was fun for you about exploring that evolution throughout season 1 and what are you excited for fans to see as that continues to evolve in the future?

Erika Henningsen: Yeah, I mean it’s my favorite part of playing Charlie is the part of her that is grounded in toughness and stubbornness and reality and fight. And, I don’t know, I love that song in particular because I feel like I’ve been faced with moments like that where I’ve just thought I kind of have to fake this till I make it. And then I surprise myself by being capable of something. I mean, honestly, the first day we recorded for Hazbin Hotel. I didn’t know, I hadn’t really sung in front of you all before. And I remember going like, Okay, I hope this goes well.

Lilith in Charlie’s story in Hazbin Hotel

And there’s just been many moments in life where I think, Am I equipped? Can I do this? So I love that song. Because it has embodied challenges that I’ve gotten to overcome and just by thinking, Okay, the only option is to try, so let’s figure this out. I hope, I mean I really hope that Charlie taps into, which I think she already is, we’re seeing snippets of it, sort of that ferocity. We know it’s inside her.

I don’t know, Viv probably knows, what unleashes it to full throttle at any given moment, over the course of the next couple of seasons. But that is something I deeply love about playing her because it’s how I am in real life. I’m pretty optimistic and kind. And then if something happens that messes with the people I love, watch the f-ck out.

Vivienne Medrano Is Excited To Share Alastor’s Full Backstory With Fans

Vivienne, is there a particular character’s backstory that stands out for you that you’re most excited for fans to see in the future?

Vivienne Medrano: Oh, this is a fun one because I feel like this is a safe answer because I won’t confirm whenever it happens. But it’s cool too because some of these characters I’ve had for a very long time and some of their information is out there because I was developing them. Especially Alastor, he’s the one I’ve had the longest and I’ve posted on the internet the most about. So some of the fans who deep dive into all those old posts and everything, kind of know of his backstory and a little bit.

But I’m really excited to actually get into that in the real show because I feel like, I mean, obviously Alastor’s such a fun character that everyone is excited to see more of and learn more of. So I really want to canonize that. And so I’m really excited when we get to get into his backstory, because I’m like, Yes, I know exactly what it is. It’s been with me for so long that I’m like, I can’t wait for that to be real though in a TV show. It’s so cool.

I’m so excited because Alastor is so fun and so terrifying.

Erika Henningsen: So is Amir [Talai].

Vivienne Medrano: Yeah. Yeah. Actually yeah.

Erika Henningsen: Wait, have you seen that punnet square? I’m so sorry. I’m about to derail us. It looks like Cinon roll is a Cinon roll is Blake [Roman]. Looks like a killer, but is a cinnamon roll is Amir and looks like a cinnamon roll but could kill you is me. And I was like, We’ve been read!

Vivienne Medrano: I love that.

Erika Henningsen Is “So Excited For The Family Dynamic” Between Charlie, Lucifer, & Lilith

Erika, I love the dynamic between Charlie and Lucifer. One of my favorite things. Are you excited to explore more of how that grows in the future as they grow closer? And then what are you excited to maybe see how Lilith and Charlie are different?

Erika Henningsen: I am so excited and again, these are things that live in Viv’s brain rent free and should not live in my brain because I can’t keep a secret. I am so excited for the family dynamic. I don’t know much about it. I just know that it feels like that’s what we’re leading towards at some point. I’m really, really pumped to see how the three of them interact if they get a chance to interact at some point.

Hazbin Hotel TV Show Poster

But Lucifer and Charlie, there’s something so special about it and so tender in the midst of this really funny adult comedy. I think people connect with the “More Than Anything” moment because it speaks to just a very pure love between a father and a daughter. I have no idea how that will stand in contrast to Charlie’s relationship with her mom, but I have a feeling it will cause some problems. I don’t know! I’m excited. I’m a fan of the show too. I don’t know anything that’s about to happen. I just get the script and go like, Nice! Cool!

Vivienne Medrano: Which is really fun. It is really fun because the cast is so invested and they don’t know anything until they read the scripts for the next season when they get them. So I’m so excited for that.

That’s so great. Yeah, I love Lucifer’s panic answer the phone the first time.

Erika Henningsen: [As Lucifer] Hey bitch!

Vivienne Medrano: I will say writing for Lucifer is super fun because obviously, especially now that we know he’s played by Jeremy [Jordan]. We know kind of the tone, but Jeremy also is one of the most off the cuff of everybody. I don’t think anything from his is truly the exact written line. It’s so fun. And that’s what’s great is I almost anticipate that. So I’m like, Whatever Jeremy does, it is getting in the show. I’m going to ensure it gets in the show. Because it’s so funny. He does so much fun stuff.

Season 2 Offers “More Rosie With The Other Overlords”

Vivienne, I also love Rosie so much. I want to see more of her. Are we going to get to see more of the overlords and is there a part of hell that we haven’t really explored that you’re excited for audiences to see?

Vivienne Medrano: Oh, that’s a good one. Yes to both. I mean, so yes, season 2 we get more Rosie with the other Overlords. We get more presence, I think, in hell because what’s nice about season 2’s antagonist is that he’s a hell character. That’s Vox. So I think we get more of a focus on that world because he’s also an Overlord. So I’m excited for that. Obviously I can’t speak to [other parts of Hell], but I’m very excited, especially with season 3 and 4. I feel like that’s really where we can start to see even more because there’s just so much more runway. So I’m really excited about what other parts of Hell we can explore.

I can’t wait. Also a hugeHelluva Bossfan, so I just want to see all of Hell.

Vivienne Medrano: I know, right? Yeah, eventually I want to figure out how every single aspect of this world to explore.

Erika Henningsen: The Avengers assemble version of the Hellaverse is, everybody wants it. Yeah. We just don’t dunno when.

Charlie and Vaggie “Have Their Own Sexy Life” In Season 2

And then Erica, I love the relationship between Vaggie and Charlie so much. I love how Vaggie kind of grounds Charlie. Can you talk to me a little bit about what your favorite part of exploring that relationship was and what you’re excited to see as they grow together again?

Erika Henningsen: Yeah, I mean I think it’s such a testament to Viv that she created this beautiful queer relationship at the center of this series and you don’t meet them in the early puppy love, falling in love. It’s just you meet them where they’ve been together for, I don’t know, a couple years and it’s a deep respect for one another. My favorite thing about them is that they support one another’s dreams.

I think even in my own personal life, that to me is such an indication of love when somebody else’s success is your success and somebody else’s failure or somebody else’s loss feels like your loss. I love that about Charlie and Vaggie. I love that we meet them in that deep teammate moment and that’s not to undercut the intimacy that they have as well. Viv and I were saying in season 2, if you have any doubt that these two have their own sexy life, that doubt will be gone after season 2, which I am obsessed with. Charlie and Vaggie can get it and we might see them do so.

Vivienne Medrano: I think to me because it’s like the relationship between them, I wanted to challenge myself. Because I personally, I love romances and I love writing them and I love, I grew up in that. That’s why the shipping culture of the show, I’m like, I see you guys, I totally get it.

Erika Henningsen: I see you and we’re making things for you.

Vivienne Medrano: And for me, I really do though, I think there’s a different kind of relationship that’s pre-established. And I really like doing those in my projects I’ve found. And for Charlie and Vaggie especially, it just felt right. It didn’t feel like I wanted to spend time doing the “will they won’t they?” Or them getting together or them just together. It just didn’t really make sense.

So their dynamic is really nice. But yeah, because of that, they’re in that not a lot of overt affection because they’re so in line with each other and they’re so used to everything. So there have been comments that are like, Are they actually together? We don’t see it so it’s not real. And I’m like, Oh it’s real. I made sure.

Erika Henningsen: Wait, can I say what you told me about the board artist?

Vivienne Medrano: Yeah, well we have some artists on the team who are amazing and they’re super super just good at the sexy and so specifically I was like these artists who are good at the sexy should do the sexy stuff. It turned out amazing. So very excited.

The Next 3 Episodes Of Helluva Boss Is “A Culmination Of All This Buildup That We’ve Done”

I can’t wait! Right before we wrap up, I want to ask a quickHelluva Bossquestion. You broke my heart with the last two episodes. I just was sitting there crying. Can you tease anything about the next three episodes we have coming at the end of the year?

Vivienne Medrano: Well, the safest thing I can say about them, obviously, is I am really proud of them. I think they’re just, I don’t know, they’re just exciting, and they’re the end of an arc that we’ve obviously spent a lot of time on. And so yeah, I think it’s a culmination of all this buildup that we’ve done. So I’m really glad you liked them and, yeah, I like that’s just breaking hearts.
