Segadid the world a massive favor when it releasedSega Genesis Classicson PC and consoles. It bundled together some of its best classic games into one collection for a relatively affordable price and made them all completely playable on modern hardware. It was a great day for fans and those interested in game preservation.

The collection launched in 2018, and since then, players have been enjoying some trulyunderrated Sega Genesis gamesin a much more convenient format. However, it seems like Sega has changed its mind as it is pulling the collection alongside a string of other incredibly popular games. While the move has upset fans,it is also hugely negatively impacting the hard work of game preservationists.

Sega Is Delisting Its Genesis Collection

It’s Delisting A Lot Of Dreamcast Games Too

Sega has decided out of the blue to pullSega Genesis Classicsfrom the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox, as well as a collection of classic Dreamcast games from Steam. It hasn’t given a reason why it is doing this, only that, as of December 6, none of the games listed on the officialSEGAwebsite will be available for purchase. This includes some of thebest Dreamcast gamesever made, as well as the aforementionedSega Genesis Classics, which bundles some of the best games from that console.

It’s important to note that outside of North America, the collection is calledSega Mega Drive Classics. This is also being delisted because it is the exact same product, just renamed due to the regional naming of the console. Additionally, while these games will no longer be available for purchase, those who already own them can continue to play and download them beyond December 6.

Some of the games being delisted includeJet Set Radio,Crazy Taxi,Sonic Adventures 2,Comix Zone,Golden Axe,Phantasy Star II,Shining Force II, andStreets of Rage 1-3. Obviously, among some of thebest Genesis gamesthere are a handful of obscure titles that are being delisted. However,Sega removing all of these from various digital storefronts across PC and consoles is bad for the consumerand for game preservation as a whole.

Publishers Have To Stop Making It Hard To Play Their Old Games

It’s Terrible For Game Preservation

Completely delisting a whole collection of classic games from storefronts is a complete blow to game preservationas it makes it harder to procure and play these games on modern hardware. It also sees the costs of physical copies of these games skyrocket, much like it did whenNintendo made the bad decisionto pullSuper Mario 3D All-Stars. It’s a frustrating ordeal, one that sees diehard fans of these franchises hurt as well as those looking to get into these classic series and games.

Sega Genesis Classic Game Getting Adapted As Animated Series On Comedy Central

A classic Sega Genesis game will now be adapted into an upcoming animated series on Comedy Central, following the success of the Sonic films.

Of course, it is possible that Sega will bring these back eventually. However, considering it has given no reason for the delistings, it’s impossible to know if this will happen or when. All this achieves is instilling FOMO in people, which forces them to rush out and buy them before they’re gone forever. It’s not a great business practice, and also means that a lot of players will miss out on some incredible games. Hopefully,Segawill allow players to purchase these games again in the future, otherwise a lot of truly iconic titles could be lost on modern hardware.
