While he isn’t one of the major Shinbakufu targets inAssassin’s Creed Shadows, Commander Seiji is a character that Naoe and Yasuke will inevitably encounter when hunting the Ox. A ronin called Koshiro is willing to help the duo in their quest, but he asks them to help him search for a former friend and comrade-in-arms named Seiji. The character can ultimately be found in a temple courtyard outside of Kanki Castle, where Naoe or Yasuke can duel him with Koshiro fighting alongside.

While Seiji’s allegiance to the Ox makes him a villain in the eyes ofAssassin’s Creed Shadows' protagonists, he clearly holds the sincere belief that he’s working for a good cause. Koshiro can’t bring himself to look at the situation objectively thanks to his history with Seiji, so he turns aside and offers the decision of Seiji’s fate to Naoe or Yasuke. Seiji can then be executed or spared, a choice that primarily hinges on the desire to bring justice to someone serving a dangerous villain or an interest in compassion for the genuinely misguided.

What Happens If You Kill Commander Seiji

Going Against Toshiro’s Wishes

Killing Commander Seiji works much like taking out any target, with Naoe or Yasuke each being willing to handle the task depending on who you played for the confrontation. Unlike somechoices inAssassin’s Creed Shadows, this one does make an actual difference in whether the commander lives or dies, and nothing gets in the way of the execution.

Yasuke makes the duel easier, but it’s not a challenging encounter either way. It’s also possible to get the drop on Seiji with Naoe.

Koshiro isn’t thrilled about Seiji being killed, but he also won’t stop helpingNaoe and Yasuke because of this displeasure, acknowledging that they ultimately had a justification for the choice they made. After killing the commander, you can move on with the hunt for the Ox, which then moves to a visit to the docks of Harima.

What Happens If You Spare Commander Seiji

Mercy In The Name Of Friendship

Likewise, sparing Commander Seiji does have a real impact on his fate, withthe commander promising that he will not meet Toshiro again for limping off to lick his wounds. While Seiji scorns Koshiro’s friendship in the moment, Koshiro is still thankful that his former ally can live to see another day. Both Naoe and Yasuke reference the value of friendship when choosing to spare him, but Yasuke delivers his message more hopefully, while Naoe is more admonishing.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Review: A Gorgeous Japan That Plays It Too Safe

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows is easy on the eyes, but a generally basic simulation, scant upgrades, and bland side activities weaken the effect.

In either case,Seiji won’t re-appear within the scope of the story, allowing Naoe and Yasuke to help Koshiro honor his promise without introducing any further trouble. With the ultimate defeat of the Ox, Commander Seiji seems to no longer pose a threat even when left alive. That being said, there aren’t any items offered as rewards here, just Toshiro’s gratitude.

You Should Spare Commander Seiji

Commander Seiji Doesn’t Seem Irredeemable

Commander Seiji ultimately lacks the more inherently villainous inclinations of most targets inAssassin’s Creed Shadows, so it’s one of the better occasions to show mercy. In Canon Mode, both Naoe and Yasuke will let the commander walk free, and this is one scenario where sticking with theCanon Mode choicemakes the most sense overall. Although Toshiro associated with the Ox in the past, he’s a good ally to have, and it makes narrative sense to stick with the choice that would please him most.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Should You Accuse Hokkyo, Junkei, Or Ayaho? (Darkness Falls)

The Assassin’s Creed Shadows quest Darkness Falls has several different characters who could be the mysterious target at hand, and any can be accused.

That being said, there’s no real reward or punishment for either decision made here, so it’s safe to kill Commander Seiji if you’re more inclined. While neither Naoe or Yasuke are quite vengeful enough by nature to seem like they’d necessarily kill Seiji, it’s definitely not out of the question for either character, whether driven by Naoe’s concern for the common people or Yasuke’s sense of justice.

Either way, the Ox will answer for his crimes shortly after Seiji’s scenario, so the primary risk associated with his movement will be cut off at the source. Even the Ox himself is one of the more sympathetic villains in the game, but as amember of the Shinbakufuand a source of conflict in the region, he has to be dealt with. While choosing to kill or spare Commander Seiji is a roleplaying decision above all else, sparing him makes sense as a way to please Toshiro and follow a logical Canon Mode path inAssassin’s Creed Shadows.
