Demonstrating a notable improvement over its first installment,Shrinkingseason 2 has had a knack for bringing in popular television stars and seamlessly weaving them into ongoing stories. New images fromPEOPLEreveal a continuation of the trend, asCobie Smulders reunites on-screen with her formerHow I Met Your Motherco-star Jason Segelfor the first time sinceHIMYMended in 2014. Smulders, who portrayedHIMYM’s Robin Scherbatsky, appears in the December 11 episode of the Apple TV+ series. She’ll play Sophie, who Jimmy (Segel) visits with Derek (Ted McGinley) in order to purchase a yellow Volkswagen.Sophie is described as a single mom. Check out the images below:
What Smulders' Addition Means For Shrinking Season 2
Jimmy Could Get A New Romantic Interest
At the start ofShrinkingseason 2, Jimmy is having a difficult time romantically. Still processing the death of his wife, his fling with Gaby (Jessica Williams) implodes and the two friends can’t find their way back to being close for some time. Midway through the season, Gaby and Jimmy are on better terms, but their relationship is still somewhat awkward. And, in any case, she’s very much into a new squeeze (played by Wayans).
It is common forShrinking’s guest characters to make more than one appearance.
Sophie being a single mom means thatshe will have a lot to bond with Jimmy over, which could lead to a deeper connection. However, even if nothing more comes of it, Smulders' presence is something of an alternate universe treat forHow I Met Your Motherfans. Even though Robin and Marshall (Segel) were friends and had friends in common, they were very much a secondary scene pairing that had relatively few significant scenes together. The Apple TV+ Original could now make up for that.

The standout addition to theShrinkingseason 2 castmight just be Brett Goldstein. The co-creator of the series, along with Segel and Bill Lawrence, Goldstein is miles removed from hisTed Lassoportrayal as the drunk driver who was responsible for the fatal car crash that killed Jimmy’s wife Tia. The dramedy has also made perfect use of sitcom veteran Wendie Malick, as the girlfriend of Paul (Harrison Ford), andit has reunitedCougar Townco-stars Christa Miller and Josh Hopkins.
Brett Goldstein Did An Incredible Job Writing Alice & Louis' Massive Scene In Shrinking Season 2 Episode 6
Shrinking season 2, episode 6, “In a Lonely Place” features a moving, massive scene between Alice and Louis that is written by Brett Goldstein.
There may come a point, as with fellow hit dramediesThe BearandOnly Murders in the Building, where the guest actors become a bit too distracting. But so far,the series has avoided that trap. Smulders, another TV pro with roles ranging from the MCUtoStumptown, should fit right in and maybe continue on for the already-confirmedShrinkingseason 3. She has that built-in chemistry with Segel, which should help.
