Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Silo season 2, episode 9.
The dynamic betweenSilo’s Mayor Bernard Holland (Tim Robbins) and Lukas Kyle (Avi Nash) undergoes an important shift in season 2, episode 9, “The Safeguard.” DuringSiloseason 1’s ending, Lukas is sent to the mines by Bernard. His fortune changes significantly in season 2 whenBernard makes Lukas his IT Shadow. Instead of toiling in the mines, Lukas instead gets to live comfortably while having access to information that no one else in Silo 18 but Bernard possesses.

Bernard does not do this out of the goodness of his heart but because he wants Lukas to decode aletter from Salvador Quinn. Quinn led the IT Department 140 years earlier during the last rebellion and Bernard believes that Quinn was responsible for quelling that rebellion. Bernard is relying on Quinn’s letter to help him destroy the current rebellion that is forming, and heknows that Lukas is the only one capable of decoding Quinn’s message. Prior to episode 9, Lukas was loyal to Bernard and did as he asked, but that is no longer the case.
Why Lukas Kyle Goes To Mechanical In Silo Season 2 – What Is He Looking For?
Lukas Is Led There After Decoding Salvador Quinn’s Letter
Lukas goes to the Mechanical level to findSilo 18’s tunnel. Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) learned about the tunnel from George Wilkins (Ferdinand Kingsley) in season 1, but she never confirmed its existence for herself. Lukas learns about the tunnel’s existence from Quinn’s letter, which reveals that the Founders built fifty silos and something called the Safeguard. Quinn encourages the reader to go to the bottom of Silo 18 to find the tunnel if they do not believe him, claiming that the tunnel will confirm this information. This is the full text that Lukas decodes in Quinn’s letter.
If you’ve gotten this far, you already know the game is rigged.

We think we’re the chosen ones, but we’re only one of many.
They built fifty.
And they created the safeguard…
If you don’t believe me, go to the very bottom of the silo.
Find the tunnel! You will get confirmation there.
Lukas tries to speak with Bernard after decoding the final lines. When he is unable to reach Bernard, Lukas takes matters into his own hands, and goes to Mechanical without Bernard’s permission.Lukas wants to see if the tunnel actually does existand to find proof of Quinn’s claims. By dropping into the water at the bottom of Mechanical, which Juliette was unable to do in season 1, Lukas finds the tunnel, and is spoken to by an ominous, programmed voice, which is referred to as the Algorithm via subtitles.
Lukas' Interaction With His Mom Proves That He’s Not Fully Working For Bernard
Lukas Is Done With Being A Coward
Going to Mechanical to find the tunnel without Bernard’s permission is only one way that Lukas proves to be a rebel in episode 9. Before going to Mechanical,Lukas meets with his mother, and gives her Quinn’s copy of the Pact for safekeeping. When his mother tries to blame her son’s current predicament on his curiosity, Lukas reveals that it is his cowardice that has guided his actions. He emphasizes that he refuses to make the mistake of being a coward again and is intent on doing the right thing.
10 Best Characters In Silo, Ranked
From Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) to Bernard Holland (Tim Robbins), who are the best characters in the Apple TV+ science-fiction series Silo?
This fully confirms that Lukas is not going to Mechanical to find the tunnel for Bernard, but because he believes it is the right thing to do. Lukas gives Quinn’s copy of the Pact to his mother because, if he does not survive the trip, he does not want Quinn’s full message to fall into the hands of Bernard. Lukas is now prioritizing the search for truth above his partnership with Bernard, even though this means potentially throwing away the security it has brought him.

How Lukas Finding The Tunnel Under Silo 18 Threatens His Future
He Is In A Precarious Position
As seen whenkilling Judge Meadows, Bernard will kill his allies if he believes it is for the good of Silo 18. Lukas' betrayal and the information he possesses will make him a threat in Bernard’s eyes. Bernard will need Lukas killed, asLukas now knows too much about Silo 18’s secrets. Given this inevitability, it may be safest for Lukas to stay in the Mechanical level just as Sheriff Paul Billings (Chinaza Uche) and Dr. Pete Nichols (Iain Glen) did after descending there earlier in season 2. Staying in Mechanical does not erase the danger ofSilo’s safeguard, though.
If he tells anyone about this conversation or about what he has seen in the tunnel, the Safeguard will be initiated.

The Algorithm in the tunnel tells Lukas that it is going to give him a directive and that this directive was given to Quinn and Meadows. Lukas is told by the Algorithm that if he tells anyone about this conversation or about what he has seen in the tunnel, the Safeguard will be initiated. The Safeguard sounds like it is an extreme measure in which Lukas and everyone in Silo 18 may be killed. This puts Lukas and all his fellow citizens in danger asSiloseason 2 nears its conclusion.
