Andrew Garfield discusses his potential return as Eduardo inThe Social Network 2.Garfield played Eduardo Saverin, a co-founder of Facebook, in the 2010 filmThe Social Network. The biopic wasdirected by David Fincherand written by Aaron Sorkin. In addition to Garfield, the film featured the leading cast of Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Timberlake, Rooney Mara, Armie Hammer, Dustin Fitzsimmons, and Joseph Mazzello. It was nominated for multiple Oscars, winning three, including Best Adapted Screenplay for Sorkin.
Speaking withEsquire, Garfield discussedThe Social Network 2and whether he would return. He praised Sorkin, saying that any project he “does is going to be really, really powerful and interesting.” However, Garfield said that while he would “be excited” about another movie,he is also doubtful about a return. This is because he “think[s] Eduardo is just living off his billions in Singapore,” and thus would not be involved in the events ofThe Social Network 2. Check out the full quote from Garfield below:

I think anything that Aaron [Sorkin] does is going to be really, really powerful and interesting, and if he’s feeling drawn to a subject, you know it’s got some juice in it. I’d be excited [about a sequel]. I don’t imagine I’d be part of it because I think Eduardo is just living off his billions in Singapore.
People think Eduardo got [screwed] over but he’s a billionaire in Singapore, and I’m sitting here, sweating, talking about myself to a bunch of strangers.

What Garfield’s Answer Means For The Social Network 2
The Social Network 2Will Have A Different Character Focus Than The First Movie
Garfield’s comment comes nearly a year after Fincher teasedThe Social Network 2. The director said that he and Sorkin “have talked about the film,” indicating its potential. They did not claim thatThe Social Network 2was actively in development. Since then,Sorkin confirmed in April 2024 that he was working on a scriptthat was somewhat a sequel toThe Social Network. At the time, Sorkin did not confirm the exact progress of the film or what its plot would specifically cover.
The Social Network 2 Must Only Happen On 1 Condition (& Aaron Sorkin Agrees)
Writer Aaron Sorkin has a script for The Social Network 2 (or something close) in the works but it will only get made if a specific condition is met.
BecauseThe Social Network 2does not have its plot revealed yet, this leaves the option open for various characters from the original film to be in the sequel. This includes Eduardo, who could make an appearance in the follow-up film. Garfield is likely right though, that it would not make sense for this character to appear, as he is not as actively involved with Facebook anymore. Instead,The Social Network 2would likely focus more on Zuckerberg or Facebook, especially its impact in the last 14 years, with events like the acquirement of Instagram and controversial data harvesting.

What Would The Social Network 2 Be About?
Sorkin Has Teased An Exciting Theme
When Sorkin confirmed his development on theSocial Networksequel earlier this year, he mentioned that he “blame[s] Facebook for January 6.” He went on to imply that the movie would explore the darker consequences of Facebook. In the world of political thrillers likeCivil War, I think that using a Facebook-oriented movie to tell a political story would be fascinating. It’s something the first film did not tackle as much but is nonetheless ripe for aSocial Networksequel.
