Superman & Loisis back for its final season. That was not always the plan, which was meant to include at least seven seasons of the popularDCseries. Still, with changes at The CW, DC Studios, and the arrival of David Corenswet’s Superman in theaters next year, it was decided thatSuperman & Loisseason 4 would be the series' swan song. The show’s final season picks up whereSuperman & Loisseason 3’s endingleft off, with Superman and Doomsday going head-to-head.

Superman & Lois

I enjoyed Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman and Elizabeth Tulloch’s Lois Lane in the Arrowverse, but it wasn’t untilSuperman & Loisthat the actors could fully live up to their potential in the roles.Superman & Loisseason 3 was a masterful lesson on how to develop a superhero series. Sure, there was engaging action throughout, but Lois' battle with cancer and how it impacted her loved ones was the season’s true driving force.Season 4 once again taps into that family drama that makes the show special, and season 3’s ending is fundamental to that.

Superman & Lois Season 4 Is Firing On All Cylinders

The DC Series Continues To Balance Drama & Action With Ease

I had the chance to watch the first three episodes ofSuperman & Loisseason 4, and I was impressed by how high the stakes were in every episode. There is no way to talk aboutSuperman & Loisseason 4 without speaking about Michael Cudlitz’s Lex Luthor. The actor had already shown that he was the real deal when Lex appeared in the final two episodes of season 3. Cudlitz is back and better than ever in the role, making Lex Luthor the most terrifying villain the DC series has ever seen.

Despite budget cuts, the Superman series continues to have the same stunning visuals and dynamic action scenes it has become known for.

The cast of The Franchise look closely at the camera

The character’s mere presence onscreen is unnerving, making it a great choice to have reserved him for the end of the show. Despite budget cuts, the Superman series continues to have the same stunning visuals and dynamic action scenes it has become known for.Superman & Loisseason 4’s action is effective, with each development mattering as much as the characters' schemes and motivations. While the fight scenes are exciting, the first three episodes of season 4 are rooted in the bonds that tie the Kent family together, and their connection makes the action hit harder.

The Franchise Review: HBO’s Superhero Satire Is So Good It Will Genuinely Make You Laugh Out Loud

The Franchise is so good and fun precisely because it has excellent, quippy writing, cast chemistry, and a steady stream of comedic situations.

It took me some time to get used to the showrecasting Jonathan Kent, but I am now a fan of Michael Bishop’s take on the character. Jonathan had an interesting arc in season 3 with his firefighter training, and the character continues to be one of the high points ofSuperman & Loisseason 4. His brother, Jordan (Alex Garfin), also has a key role to play in the show’s final year. After training to control his powers for multiple seasons, Jordan must show if he’s made good use of those lessons, as he’s tested in a big way.

Tyler Hoechlin & Elizabeth Tulloch Remain The Heart Of Superman & Lois

Season 4’s Cuts To The Cast Are Noticeable & Negatively Affect The Show

Much like the show’s first season,Superman & Loisseason 4 features many flashbacks. Clark and Lois' past is explored beautifully, and it once again serves to show just how much chemistry Hoechlin and Tulloch have in these iconic roles. At this point, Hoechlin’s version of Superman has easily become one of the best live-action iterations of the hero. The actor plays both the confident, heroic side of the Man of Steel and the bubbly, vibrant Clark Kent persona perfectly, making both Clark and Superman matter equally, which is not always the case in adaptations.

The stakes have never been higher, and Lois Lane is right in the middle of the action, having to deal with major events in rapid succession.

As for Tulloch’s Lois, the character was spotlighted throughout season 3 with her battle against cancer. Now, Lois is stronger for getting through the ordeal, and that strength is very much needed for her arc in the DC series' final season.Superman & Loisseason 4 is dark and emotional, with Tulloch anchoring many of the most emotional scenes in the season’s first three episodes. The stakes have never been higher, and Lois Lane is right in the middle of the action, having to deal with major events in rapid succession.

My one problem withSuperman & Loisseason 4 is related to the show’s ensemble.Seven actors were dropped from the series' main castdue to budget cuts — the same reason the final season only has 10 episodes. When watching season 4, the characters' absence is felt in major moments, as they should be present in key events. But they’re either not there or appear sparingly. I hope the rest of the season features more returning faces, as Smallville loses a lot of its charm without them. Aside from that, season 4 is off to a solid start.

Superman & Loisseason 4 kicks off with a two-episode premiere at 8pm ET on Monday, October 7 on The CW.

Based on the characters from DC Comics, Superman & Lois follows Clark Kent and Lois Lane, attempting to live a quiet life in Smallville with their twin sons Jonathan and Jordan. Unfortunately for the couple, their lives continue to be effected by Clark’s superhero identity and powers. Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch star as Clark and Lois, with Jordan Elsass and Alex Garfin portraying the couple’s sons.
