Ted Lassoseason 4’s story gets an update from co-creator Bill Lawrence. Well over a year after the soccer dramedy closed out its third installment, it was reported in August that plans were being put into place to getTed Lassoseason 4rolling. Warner Bros. TV, the studio behind the hit Apple TV+ series, was said to be reaching out to the actors and checking their availability in the hopes of getting a writers' room up and running. However, executives at WB TV, as well as cast and crew, have been reluctant to confirm whether the show is actually coming back.
In an interview with theLos Angeles Timesto discuss some of his recent TV projects, including theShrinkingseason 2 finale, Lawrence gives the most candid response about season 4 yet. The veteran writer, who createdTed Lassowith Jason Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt, and Joe Kelly, makes clear that he is not the leading creative voice on the show and that it is Sudeikis who will share details about what’s next. However, in the quote below, LawrencedescribesTed Lassoseason 4 as a “self-reboot” and doesn’t dispute that it is happening:
I’m always very careful to make sure it never comes out on my mouth like it’s my show, because I’m so proud to be part of it. But Jason’s the guy driving the wheel on that. But the one thing that he was always very clear about, without divulging anything, is that the story that we came up with for the first three seasons was “Ted Lasso” had a beginning, middle and end; without a doubt it had an end, you saw him jumping around and go home. It helped cement my thoughts and I don’t want to speak for him, but it’d be interesting to see that there’s always another story to tell with characters that people like, but it’s a different story. It’s almost a self-reboot. I think that he [Jason] always had in his head another story he wanted to tell.

The series, likeShrinking, was conceived as a story with three parts. By the time theTed Lassoseason 3 finale premiered, Ted’s story came to a close and he returned to the U.S. to be with his family. Lawrence’s comments could mean that, as speculated, Sudeikis' on-screen as Coach Lasso takes a backseat as season 4 focuses on a women’s soccer team. It could also mean that the focus on the central AFC Richmond team continues, albeit without Lasso being a focal point.
