Netflix’s explosive action comedyThe Unionimpressed in August 2024, but will Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry return inThe Union 2. In the film, Wahlberg stars as an everyman named Mike who is suddenly thrust into international espionage when his high school sweetheart (Berry) arrives and recruits him for a dangerous mission. Mixing the classic fish-out-of-water scenario seen in so many action comedies with the undeniable star power of Wahlberg and Berry, Netflix delivered a classic action romp. Though the film hardly breaks the mold,The Unionhad instant sequel potential.
Besides the ever-present chance of a Hollywood follow-up,The Union’s endingexplicitly and ambitiously leaves things unresolved. Perhaps the biggest open door forThe Union 2is the burgeoning relationship between Berry’s Roxanne and Wahlberg’s Mike, and the movie eschews the last act kiss in favor of suspense. This, along with the larger mission teased in the final moments of the film, is proof that plans are in place for a sequel. ThoughThe Union 2isn’t official yet, Netflix has already revealed that they have big hopes for a franchise if the first movie is a big enough hit.

The Movie’s Stars Discuss Their Sequel Hopes
As hype for the first movie continues to build, the latest news seesthe possibility ofThe Union 2discussedby Wahlberg and Berry. The two A-listers spoke candidly about their hopes for a follow-up, and were joined by director Julian Farino who echoed their sentiments while also offering a few story teases as well.
Speaking about the lack of kiss between the two star-crossed lovers at the end of the film, Berry said"Once they kiss, then it’s over. We’re hoping if we get to do a second one, we’ll let that chase continue." Besides simply offering praise for the film and expressing optimism for the sequel,it’s clear that the trio have real ideas to continue the adventure.

Read Berry, Wahlberg, and Farino’s comments below:
Julian Farino: We take the relationship to a certain place, and then I think you’ve got to leave a lot of space to go. Netflix always said to us at the beginning, “You have to think of this as a possible three-movie idea.” So if an audience comes out wanting a kiss, then we’ve probably done alright, in my opinion.

Halle Berry: Once they kiss, then it’s over. We’re hoping if we get to do a second one, we’ll let that chase continue. You want to see the journey — to see these two high school sweethearts find each other.
Mark Wahlberg: If we get to go on and do something else, I would imagine there’ll be a lot more than a kiss. But, you know, we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

Netflix Hasn’t Green-Lit The Sequel Yet
Though reviews forThe Unionare middling at best (viaRotten Tomatoes), that has never stopped sequels from being green-lit if the demand is high enough. At this juncture, the jury is still out on the Wahlberg and Berry vehicle, and it’s unclear where the movie stands because Netflix is notoriously tight-lipped about viewership data. It has all the makings of a streaming hit, and though comfortably low-stakes and somewhat uninspired, the movie is the perfect light entertainment that Netflix is best at.

The Kiss Will Have To Wait
With Nick being made a full-fledged Union member, and the couple still exploring their relationship, it’s clear that the first film was merely a sample of what was to come.
Like any great spy movie that came before it,the ending ofThe Unionexplicitly teased that there were more globe-trotting adventures in store. Having vanquished the traitorous Nick, Roxanne and Mike are free to explore their new relationship. However, their romantic plans are put on hold as Tom calls them in for another important mission. With Nick being made a full-fledged Union member, and the couple still exploring their relationship, it’s clear that the first film was merely a sample of what was to come.

As for the duo’s newest mission, the ending ofThe Unionoffers very few details. Tom mentions something happening in Marrakesh, but it’s unclear if the Moroccan city will factor into the sequel’s story or if some other mission will be dreamed up. Despite the uncertainty, the first film very intentionally left Jessica De Gouw’s Auctioneer free, meaning the devious information trader could be the next target inThe Union 2.
