Astrid was on a search for her father, Lydia was on a search for Astrid, Delia’s death was thrown into the mix, and Lydia’s fiancé was becoming increasingly horrible, to name just a few. Unfortunately, the pacing and interweaving plot lines inMiss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Childrenfelt very similar to these issues inBeetlejuice Beetlejuice. The plot is driven by the idea that this group of children living with the titular Miss Peregrine have their own unique"peculiarities,“meaning powers, and protagonist Jake discovers he possesses peculiarities as well.

While this story is fairly straightforward, the narrative gets tangled up in its own oddities, from time jumps (and time loops) to"hollowgasts"that eat the eyeballs of peculiars to become"wights”—more human-like beings. All of this is contained within a 2-hour runtime that also focuses on family dynamics, such as Jake’s complicated relationship with his father and the history of his grandfather, and Jake’s mental health. While both movies have proven popular for good reasons, it’s fair to say thatBeetlejuice BeetlejuiceandMiss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Childrenboth suffer from plots that are overstuffed.
