Today’s Connections Category Hints
FEBRUARY 15 #615
Today’s puzzle was a challenge for me, but I did end up getting there in the end and I can help you get there too. There was an interesting mix of words today, and the words that confused me didn’t feel like they normally do. There were also some words that felt like they should belong together that didn’t. Looking at them now, it looks easier than it was for me, but that was not how it felt at the time.
NYT Mini Crossword: 8 Strategies To Solve It Fast
This tricky little five by five crossword isn’t always as easy as it looks; here are a couple easy tips and tricks to beat your friends' times!
If you need to know more, the category names are waiting for you down below. There are a lot more spoilers below if you need a little more.

___CAKE
SPILL
TELL
This category was the first one I got and was the easiest one to spot. DISH is a bit of a hard one, as it could be put together with PAN and CUP as well. There’s not really a fourth word to go with them, which is why I was able to avoid that particular trap, but I did consider it for a little while. I reread all of the words in this puzzle quite a bit, actually, which is not always typical of how I play, but it was today.
OPTION
RETURN
There was a long time when I was trying to force OPTION, RETURN, and ALTERNATIVE together with some other word. I couldn’t, and that was quite frustrating, but after dropping the idea, I did see COMMAND and CONTROL.This also felt like its own pair that could be a totally different category, but then I looked back at OPTION and it clicked. I was able to put it together and move onto the other options, which did not click as easily.

POPULAR
PROGRESSIVE
I played around a lot with the remaining 8 words, and I was very unsure what was going on. I figured one of them was the pile of seemingly random words, but which random words were which, I didn’t know. In the end,I surprised myself by guessing this combination purely because they felt more related than the shorter ones. It was my last guess too, and the amount of surprise and relief I felt at the same time was palpable. Then I got excited about finishing off the remaining words.
PAN
SHORT
SHORT was an odd word in this puzzle as I really didn’t know what to do with it for the entire time. PAN and CUP I would have put together regardless, but CHEESE is an odd one. That being said, seeing the results,a cheesecake is my favorite form of cake, and I now want a slice quite badly. Perhaps I will have to get one as a treat when I next go to the grocery store. Until then, I will sign off on this one as completed and move onto the next puzzle.
