Marvel’s newUltimate Universehas finally introduced its all-new version ofWolverinein all its bloody glory, and his new codename officially marks the most brutal and unforgivable version of the character ever. Though it was already revealed that the rugged X-Men icon is this universe’s Winter Soldier, the events of his debut issue solidify that he could be the most dangerous and deadly version of the character seen yet.
Ultimate Wolverine#1 – written by Chris Condon, with art by Alessandro Cappuccio – offers a bit of backstory for thisdiabolical new take on the brainwashed super-assassin. Going feral in his first mission, the Wolverine and Winter Soldier hybrid embarks on a violent rampage that will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to seek redemption after.

Though the Winter Soldier is known for his redemption arc in Marvel Comics,Wolverine’s incarnation of the assassin in the Ultimate Universe commits heinous acts of violence against his own people, making him totally irredeemable. To be fair, he’s not doing this of his own volition, with hismemory wiped and free will overrided by Directorate X. However, once Winter Soldier slaughters two mutants of the Opposition, including one who’s clearly a dear friend, it’s hard to imagine that he could even forgive himself for the massacre that unfolds inUltimate Wolverine#1,if he ever snaps out of it.

Even though he’s not in control at this point, it will be difficult for the character to absolve himself of his guilt, and it could be even harder toearn trust from Mystique and Nightcrawler’sallies in the universe and their fans reading the series.
