Dauberman’sSalem’s Lotmade some changes to King’s book, including the final showdown between survivors Ben Mears and Mark Petrie (played in the movie by Jordan Preston Carter). In the movie, Mark, Ben, and Dr. Cody (Alfre Woodard) find out that the vampires hide in the trunks of the cars at the drive-in and trick them into coming out before the sun sets. Unfortunately, Cody is killed by Susan’s mother, Anne, and soBen and Mark confront the vampires and Barlow himself by themselves.
The novel has a different and not-so-optimistic ending, all thanks to its epilogue.

Knowing well that there are many hiding places for the vampires in the Lot,Ben starts a fire in the nearby woods, hoping that it will spread through the town– and, with that, that the vampires will flee their hiding spots. In theory, that would make it easier for Ben and Mark to spot the vampires and kill them, but there are way too many, with the novel ending with Ben and Mark driving away to prepare for their mission as the fire spreads.
