Call of Dutyfans already seem to have plenty to look forward to with theimpending release ofBlack Ops 6in October, with a story set to follow on fromCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold Warwith a new spy thriller set in the 1990s, during the Gulf War. However, many were hoping that there could be a reason to jump back into one of the older entries in the series again in the run-up to its release,Modern Warfare Remastered.
Recently, there has beena huge surge in purchases for the 2016 titleCall of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. As its name would suggest, the title was a remastered version of 2007’s acclaimedCall of Duty 4: Modern Warfareand featuredgraphical enhancements, updated animations, and both new and revised sound effects. It also featured new multiplayer content and additional single-player achievements. The following year, 2009’sCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2also received the remaster treatment, butbizarrely,this was only for its campaign, and none of its multiplayer components were included, despite manyCall of Dutyplayers agreeing that the game features some of the best maps in the series.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remasteredlaunched in November 2016 as part of the special edition bundles ofCall of Duty: Infinite Warfare.However, it is listed asCall of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered (2017)on Steam because it received a standalone release months afterInfinite Warfare’s launch.

A huge reason for this increase in sales could be attributed to aplanned mod from Watchful Wolf calledH2M, which has sadly been canceled after the team involved was sent a cease and desist by Activision Publishing. As per a post by theH2 Multiplayer ModX account on June 03, 2025, the modders have complied with this order and shut down all operations “immediately and permanently.” A similar thing happened with theSM²mod, which was set to overhaul the originalCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2with over 100 weapons and revamped gameplay systems before the team received a cease-and-desist letter in May 2023.
It’s a shame, as according to the official site, the H2M mod intended to recreate the original Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer experience as closely as possible, albeit with some new twists. The mod would have seen over 50 maps being added toModern Warfare Remastered- including all ofModern Warfare Remastered’s and the originalModern Warfare 2multiplayer maps, as well as some conversions of the campaign’s levels into multiplayer maps - at launch.
There were also plans for an updated progression system that would have seen70 ranks for players to progress through and 10 Prestige levels, with the option to work their way up to level 1000 after hitting Prestige 10. H2M would have addedCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered’s weapons have been added alongside a few fan-favoriteones fromModern Warfare Remastered.Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered’s attachments, perks, pro perks, and equipment had also been implemented alongsideModern Warfare 2’s Killstreak perks for a classic experience.

TheH2Mmod would have required acopy ofCall of Duty: Modern Warfare Remasteredto play, and this is likely the reason for the title’s increase in sales onSteam.Modern Warfare Remasteredcurrently sits in fourth place for Top Sellers on the site (fifth if the Steam Deck is included and not just games, as Valve’s handheld device is the best-selling product on the site), andhad it not been canceled, theH2Mmod launcher would have launched today, on August 16.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remasteredis 9 places higher in Steam’s charts thanCall of Duty: Black Ops 6as of the time of writing, but it will be interesting to see how many players refund the title in alignment with Steam’s return policy now the mod has been shut down.
For fans of the originalCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, theH2Mmod looked like a great way to recapture the experience of those multiplayer sessions with new and improved visuals. While so many studios seem to embrace the modding community, it’s a shame Activision has pulled mods looking to bring back some of the more classicCall of Dutyexperience, but this is likely due to the studio wanting more traffic to its current official multiplayer servers or its free-to-play titleWarzone.
